BACKGROUND:
The Bioinformationist at the Arizona Health Sciences Library (AHSL) provides leadership in the planning, coordination, delivery, and promotion of bioinformatics services in support of research on the Arizona Health Sciences campus, which includes the Colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Pharmacy as well as interdisciplinary researchers. This position reports to the Assistant Director for User Support and Services.

This is a continuing-eligible, academic professional position. Arizona Health Sciences Library (AHSL)
AHSL is the largest, most comprehensive health sciences library in Arizona, providing electronic access to vast stores of biomedical literature, participating as instructors in the curriculum of the colleges, working with researchers and clinicians on projects to improve access to essential information, and providing comfortable space for small group collaborations and quiet studying in a collegial atmosphere. AHSL's primary clientele are the UA colleges associated with the Arizona Health Sciences Center, including University Medical Center.

AHSL is active statewide, working with health professionals and public libraries, health departments, and community groups to improve the access to high-quality health information. Equipping Arizonans with effective health information seeking skills is important to improved health for everyone in our community. AHSL is a member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine/National Library of Medicine and serves as the designated resource library for Arizona.

AHSL is also a founding member of the Arizona Health Information Network (AZHIN), a consortium of the major hospitals in Arizona, rural clinics, telemedicine sites, state and local health departments, and health-related educational institutions. Through AZHIN, member institutions are able to realize large discounts in the cost of electronic resources, making more high-quality online resources available to all, even the smallest and most remote organizations in our state.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Build and maintain professional relationships with researchers and graduate students in order to establish channels of communication and increase understanding of the information needs of the research community.
• Provide leadership in the development of a program of library-based bioinformatics support for the health sciences campus.
• Promote the use of bioinformatics tools and specialized databases to the health sciences community.
• In collaboration with AHSL librarians, design, implement or arrange for a suite of training opportunities in a variety of formats that meet the needs of the research community at the Arizona Health Sciences Center.
• Consult individually with faculty, researchers, grad students, postdocs, and fellows to support ongoing research and grant applications.
• Work with the UA Libraries Data Curation Librarian and others in analyzing how health sciences researchers manage their data, including data management plans, storage, etc., and develop tools, services and instruction to address assessed needs.
• Monitor and assess the satisfaction level of researchers with library bioinformatics services, and work collaboratively with them and others to continually improve library programs and services.
• Keep abreast of emerging research trends and support tools.
• Participate in the work of the library and collaborate with and support other liaison librarians.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Master's degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution; or other relevant advanced degree
• Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a highly collaborative and inclusive environment, one that values and leverages the benefits of diverse perspectives. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERENCES:

• Understanding of the process and culture of research
• Familiarity with the process of grant support
• Enthusiasm for and skill in teaching
• Experience in a health sciences, academic, or life sciences setting
• Ability to search PubMed and other NCBI databases
• Familiarity with specialized genomic or proteomic databases
