    BACKGROUND

The Pathogen Informatics team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is looking to recruit an experienced Software Developer.

The Sanger Institute is one of Europe's leading genome research institutes. Funded primarily by the Wellcome Trust, we use high-throughput genomics-based techniques to carry out research into the causes of human and animal diseases. The Pathogen Genomics group is applying large-scale next-generation sequencing technologies to pathogen populations to track transmission pathways and identify determinants of drug resistance and virulence. The Pathogen Informatics group is responsible for the delivery of many of these large-scale bacteria, parasite and virus sequencing projects. As part of the Pathogen Informatics group, we are seeking to hire a skilled informatician to develop systems to manage, analyse and query the vast amounts of sequencing data produced by these projects.

Our team is based on the principles of agile software development so that the software can be rapidly prototyped, updated regularly and receive rapid feedback from the scientists. We employ a test-driven development strategy for all new software development projects and strongly promote open source development using Github for all our software projects.

This role would suit somebody with well developed programming skills and is looking for a new challenge or a scientific programmer who wishes to gain direct knowledge of next-generation sequencing technologies. The successful candidate will work closely with the lead developers and analysts in the team so previous experience with sequencing data is not strictly necessary. This position is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to gain significant experience working with next-generation sequencing data.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Essential Skills:
    • Significant programming experience in one or more modern programming languages (e.g. Perl, Python, C etc.)
    • Experience of object oriented development
    • Demonstrable experience of using UNIX / LINUX
    • Ability to quickly adapt to new problems and ideas
    • Excellent problem-solving skills
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

    PREFERENCES

    Ideal Skills:
    • Previous experience in Modern Perl (Moose)
    • Knowledge of relational database systems and manipulation via SQL
    • Experience with running software on a compute farm or cluster
    • Experience with managing large volumes of data
    • Some knowledge or experience in bioinformatics

    COMPENSATION

Salary range GBP 30,196 - GBP 38,088 dependent on experience

We offer a competitive reward package, including excellent benefits.

In addition, the Institute benefits from world class computational and data centre facilities. There is a first names culture, informal dress code, company social calendar and modern offices set in the 55 acre grounds of Hinxton Hall and associated wet land reserve.
