Opportunity: Scientific Biocurator @ European Molecular Biology Laboratory -- Heidelberg, Germany
Submitted by EMBL Recruitment; posted on Saturday, October 18, 2014

    BACKGROUND

EMBO is an organization of more than 1700 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences. The major goals of the organization are to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a European research environment where scientists can achieve their best work.

EMBO helps young scientists to advance their research, promote their international reputations and ensure their mobility. Courses, workshops, conferences and scientific journals disseminate the latest research and offer training in techniques to maintain high standards of excellence in research practice. EMBO helps to shape science and research policy by seeking input and feedback from our community and by following closely the trends in science in Europe.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

EMBO is looking for a Scientific Biocurator to join the SourceData project. The Scientific Biocurator will implement the digitalization of the scientific data and metadata associated with figures published in The EMBO Journal, EMBO reports, Molecular Systems Biology and EMBO Molecular Medicine and in SourceData partner journals. This task will involve the curation of figures and datasets in published papers and in submitted manuscripts using structured, machine-readable information.

The SourceData project is an EMBO initiative in collaboration with the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and supported by the Bosch Foundation. The aim of SourceData is to make published data freely available to the scientific community in a searchable and re-usable form and to provide biocuration tools adapted to the publishing workflow. By contributing to the optimization of the curation process with these tools and as part of the EMBO editorial team, the Scientific Biocurator will play a key part in transforming the scientific paper into a rich research resource.

    Specific responsibilities:
    • Annotate figures in published and submitted papers using the SourceData editorial curation tool and semantic model
    • Propose modifications and updates to the SourceData semantic model
    • Work with SourceData developers to optimize the functionality and user interface of the curation tool
    • Work with EMBO Press editors and the production offices at Wiley and HighWire to optimize the integration of biocuration tasks within the editorial and production workflows
    • Keep up to date on innovations in the fields related to biocuration, community standards development and data exchange formats

    REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate has a strong scientific background in biology and a PhD in molecular or computational biology. For this challenging position, candidates must demonstrate a strong ability for logical reasoning, analytical thinking and attention to detail. Knowledge of biocuration, ontology development, semantic web technologies is an additional advantage.
