    BACKGROUND

    The Institute:
    The CRG, the Centre for Genomic Regulation, is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, whose mission is to discover and advance knowledge for the benefit of society, public health and economic prosperity.

    The breadth of topics, approaches and technologies at the CRG permits a broad range of fundamental issues in life sciences and biomedicine to be addressed. Research at the CRG falls into four main areas: gene regulation, stem cells and cancer; cell and developmental biology; bioinformatics and genomics; and systems biology.

    With more than 350 scientists from 41 countries, the CRG excellence is based on an interdisciplinary, motivated and creative scientific team that is supported by high-end and innovative technologies.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Mission of the role:
    The CRG offers an exciting opportunity for a bioinformatician to play a significant role at and to be part of the CRG Bioinformatics Core, which mission is to provide general and customized bioinformatics support for the CRG Labs and affiliated institutions. The prospective candidate will be service-oriented, will closely interact with researchers helping in designing experiments, will conduct data analysis, and develop new bioinformatics methods and pipelines. In addition, the selected candidate will teach and contribute to the basic and advanced bioinformatics training courses at the CRG.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Degree in computer sciences, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biology or biotechnology
    • A PhD in Bioinformatics / Molecular Biology / Biostatistics will be valued
    Required skills:
    • Knowledge and experience in UNIX/LINUX to an advanced level (including shell scripting)
    • Experience in programming (Python, Perl, C, Java or other language)
    • Knowledge of statistics and experience in R
    • Experience in database management and manipulation
    • Knowledge and understanding of major concepts in genetics and molecular biology
    Additional beneficial skills:
    • Experience in gene expression network modelling, pathway and GO enrichment analyses
    • Experience in protein sequence analysis and annotation and handling proteomics data
    • Experience in NGS data analysis
    • Experience in analysing microscopy images
    • Experience in data integration
    • Experience with handling large data sets (hundreds of gigabytes and more)
    Languages:
    • Fluent level of English.
    Soft skills:
    The successful candidate should be able to work independently, prioritize and manage a variety of tasks, and shift priorities rapidly. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the capacity to interact with multidisciplinary staff in a fast-paced environment are required

    TERMS

    Duration: permanent position (with a probation period)
    Starting date: March 2015

    COMPENSATION

    Estimated annual gross salary: A competitive salary will be provided, which will be well matched relative to the cost of living in Barcelona, and adjusted according to experience
