BACKGROUND
The Hu Lab (http://www.hu-bioinformaticslab.org/positions.html) at The University of Manitoba has two graduate student positions.
For applicants with statistical background, their applications will go for Individual Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS) program (http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admissions/programs/iis_program.html). The first (home) department is Biochemistry and Medical Genetics and The second department is Statistics.
For applicants with computer science background, their applications will go for Individual Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS) program (http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admissions/programs/iis_program.html). The first (home) department is Biochemistry and Medical Genetics and The second department is Computer Science.
For applicants with human genetics background and strong programming skill, their applications will go for the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics.REQUIREMENTS
For all applicants, they should have:- A GPA of at least 3.5 (4.5 scale) in the previous 60 credit hours of university study, or equivalent(normally two years). In addition, during this period there should be no grade less than C+ in any computer science, statistics, biochemistry, genetics or life science courses deemed relevant to the proposed course of study. The method to calculate GPA can be found here: http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/engineering/departments/ece/pros_students/grad/gpa.html#CONVERTING_GRADES_TO_A_45_GRADING_SYSTEM
- Passed one of the following English exam (results are still valid) if they have not completed a post-secondary education within a English-speaking environment: TOEFL - Internet-based test (80); MELAB - 80%; CAEL - 60 overall and 60 on each subject; IELTS - 6.5
- Generally, there is no direct entry into the Ph.D. program for students with Master's degrees from non-Canadian universities. Applications will be assessed by the admissions committee on an individual basis; in most cases students with Master's degrees from international universities are admitted into the Master's program. They can subsequently request for a transfer into the Ph.D. program, if eligible, based on the procedures within 1.5 years.
HOW TO APPLY
Applicants should send Dr. Pingzhao Hu their CV, transcripts with GPAs calculated using the approach mentioned above and English test results.
