    RESPONSIBILITIES

    VCU Health System is recruiting for a Bioinformatician to join the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.

    The chief objective of this position:
    The Bioinformatics Scientist will be responsible for design, development and enhancement of bioinformatics tools and algorithms for processing and mining large scale genomic data, utilizing techniques from bioinformatics, statistics, and computer science. This position will also involve evaluating the performance of different disease assays. Perform basic and advanced analysis on data produced from next generation sequencing systems (DNA-seq, RNA-seq, metagenomics, ChIP-seq, etc.) as well as genotyping and gene expression microarrays.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Level and type of experience:
    • Previous experience in de novo sequence analysis and re-sequencing, including whole genome, whole exome, targeted DNA and RNA-Seq from multiple platforms such as Illumina or Life Technologies/Thermo Fisher
    • Previous experience with the relevant sequence analysis tools/best practices including development of massively parallel analytical sequencing pipelines
    • Knowledge, background, or experience in molecular biology
    Education/training:
    • Masters Degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics or closely related field, or the equivalent of 2 - 5 years experience in Bioinformatics.
    Describe independent action(s):
    • Performs basic and advanced analysis on data produced from next generation sequencing systems
    • Prioritizes and balances multiple projects to meet timelines

    PREFERENCES

    Level and type of experience:
    • Previous experience analyzing high-density arrays of any type
    • Knowledge of inherited disorders and oncology
    • Previous experience in software design and development
    • Previous experience analyzing of high-dimensional datasets using machine learning algorithms and other data mining methodologies desired
    • Strong bioinformatics analysis/scripting experience including proficiency with scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python) and other computer languages (e.g. JAVA, C, C++). Experience in working in a Linux/UNIX environment and experience with parallel computing is a plus.
    Education/training:
    • PhD in bioinformatics or biostatistics
