Submitted by Jody Aikawa; posted on Tuesday, January 13, 2015

    BACKGROUND

The Oncology Clinical Biomarkers group is a team of scientists responsible for the development and implementation of biomarker strategies to support clinical drug development in cancer. This team is responsible for the synergistic application of multiple genomic and biochemical technology platforms for the identification and development of novel pharmacodynamic biomarker assays, mechanistic biomarkers and developing patient stratification strategies. In addition, they will coordinate collaborations and alliances with both internal and external research partners as well as implement state of the art biomarker discovery technologies and strategies. Members of this team work on multifaceted projects in collaboration with both Pre-Clinical Discovery and Clinical Research colleagues to impact the organization at multiple levels of drug research and development.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities of the Principal Scientist will include leadership of multiple biomarker research projects within the Oncology Clinical Biomarkers group. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and collaborative individual with the ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously while working in a matrix organization. In addition, will contribute to Discovery and ECTR approaches to enable the discovery and validation of new BMs and pharmacological targets in humans. The focus of these activities will be to ensure optimally informed decision making in drug development and to utilize BMs and emerging diagnostics in the effective implementation of targeted and personalized medicine.

    Primary Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Facilitate and deliver the discovery, development, validation and appropriate utilization of Biomarkers (BMs), and diagnostic tools during drug development. Supporting the clinical biomarker discovery and implementation plan (to include consideration of Proof of Mechanism, Proof of Concept, safety and pharmacodiagnostic activities) for designated projects. Contribute to clinical BM strategy for project teams within selected therapeutic areas and utilisation of specific technologies such as genetics, genomics, proteomics, molecular pathology, imaging etc. Contribute to the entire function in his/her areas of particular expertise such as pharmacogenetics, transcriptomics, proteomics, imaging, psychometrics, etc. and/or specific therapeutic area expertise. Collaborate with senior internal, academic, and external industry.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A Physician or Scientist (MD, PhD, or equivalent demonstrated excellence in biomedical science) with strong practical experience of clinical/research activities in academia and/or industry based drug development Experience
    • Experience, skills, knowledge in the development and utilization of BMs or BM-technologies (such as genetics and genomics, imaging, pathology, psychometrics, etc.)
    • Experience in experimental medicine or BM related activities in responsible academic or industry roles
    • Excellent leadership skills including motivation and delegation
    • Ability to lead specific tasks, to be a team member
    • Good interpersonal skills
    • Effectiveness when operating within matrix structures
    • Expertise and consistent success in scientific research and/or clinical practice (as evidenced by appropriate higher qualifications, publication and relevant specialist accreditation)
