Opportunity: 3 Bioinformaticians @ European Molecular Biology Laboratory -- Heidelberg, Germany
Submitted by EMBL Recruitment; posted on Monday, February 23, 2015

    BACKGROUND

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Monterotondo near Rome (Italy).

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Three positions are open for service-oriented scientists with experience in computational analysis of biological data. The positions are part of an initiative for the development of bioinformatics infrastructure in Germany through the newly-established BMBF-funded German National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Network (de.NBI). They will be used for extensive collaborations with scientists from EMBL and the other institutions of the Heidelberg Centre for Human Bioinformatics (HD-HuB).

    Their common responsibilities include:
    • Providing advice and consultation on the use of computational tools to biological researchers
    • Developing and delivering training
    • Developing and maintaining online resources
Common requirements of the three positions include: a PhD or equivalent experience in an appropriate field, excellent communication and organisational skills including excellent written and spoken English, programming skills, a desire and ability to work well within a team, and the ability to rapidly adapt to changing needs in a quickly evolving research landscape.

    REQUIREMENTS

Specific descriptions of the three positions are given below.

    1. Bioinformatician: Coordination and Training
Providing coordination of outreach and training associated with the Heidelberg Human Bioinformatics (HD-HuB) node of de.NBI. Working closely with other HD-HuB staff to (i) deliver high-quality bioinformatics training for German scientists, with a particular focus on the tools developed within HD-HuB, and to (ii) develop Web-front ends for these services to be integrated into the de.NBI portal.

    2. Bioinformatician: Metagenomics
Working with scientists at EMBL on the development and deployment of human metagenomics-related tools for use by the wider scientific community. Providing training and education on the use of these tools, and on other aspects of bioinformatics, and providing consultancy services to German users of these tools.

    3. Bioinformatician or Software Engineer: Workflows and Pipelines
Working closely with other scientists in HD-HuB and EMBL to produce efficient tool pipelines and workflows for common human "omic" data analyses. Using best-practice and leading tools (e.g. R/Bioconductor, GATK, Delly) to build robust software for a wide user community; they will be for easy deployment by users on their own systems, or run on cloud and virtualization infrastructures.

Indicate in your covering letter which of the positions you want to apply for; if you are applying for more than one position, then mention all of these positions in the covering letter, for example by referring to the job numbers described in the announcement i.e.:
    1. Bioinformatician: Coordination and Training
    2. Bioinformatician: Metagenomics
    3. Bioinformatician or Software Engineer: Workflows and Pipelines
