BACKGROUND
The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. (http://www.noble.org) is a non-profit research institute with a vision to influence agriculture by exploring and improving production agriculture techniques and advancing plant science through research and discovery. The Foundation is one of the world's leaders in interpretation of the Medicago genome and in bioenergy crops including switchgrass, alfalfa and tall fescue. The Foundation has made substantial investments to enhance its bioinformatics infrastructure which has resulted in the need for more bioinformatics professionals.RESPONSIBILITIES
The Scientific Data Analyst & Programmer will not only apply their computing skills to biological problem solving, and to develop bioinformatics databases, web sites, data visualization tools in order to support various scientific projects, but will also have extremely good communication skills, team-building capabilities and an interest in training researchers. The candidate will also contribute to applied research in a team environment to enhance the Foundation's research computing infrastructure. Qualifications for the Scientific Data Analyst & Programmer:- Master of computer science, computer engineering, bioinformatics or a closely related area, or a bachelor's degree with comparable experience required
- 2 years full-time experience in scientific software and large scale database system design and implementation, or 4 years full-time experience with a bachelor's degree required
- Experience with analytics, data mining, web designing and data visualization preferred
- Broad knowledge of industry software development standards and practices
- Experience with development in a Linux environment
- Ability to solve problems independently yet function well as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Experience with relational databases, preferably MySQL
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
PREFERENCES
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:- Experience with developing scientific systems in a web environment
- Experience with at least one of the following programming languages: Java, Perl, PHP or Python
- Basic knowledge of molecular biology, genomics, genetics and transcriptomics concepts and techniques
