Opportunity: Bioinformatician II @ Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason -- Seattle, WA (US)
Submitted by Human Resources; posted on Saturday, February 28, 2015

    BACKGROUND

Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) is an internationally-recognized medical research institute that has taken on the challenge of finding a cure for autoimmune and immune-mediated diseases. Its approach is through a combination of advanced laboratory experimentation and carefully designed translational research programs. This means you can contribute to scientific advances that have a direct impact on people suffering from these diseases, including type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, allergies and asthma.

As a non-profit organization within the Virginia Mason Health System, BRI promotes clinical and interdisciplinary research, particularly in cancer, neuroscience and heart disease. Established in 1956, BRI is Washington State's oldest medical research institute.

When choosing to devote your energy to improving human health, you want to be in a research environment that has the people and resources that enable success. At BRI we have:
    • A close working relationship with Virginia Mason Medical Center, giving us direct access to over 10,000 people suffering from autoimmune disease and who have committed their time to provide personal information, and blood, to contribute to finding the cure
    • Twenty five Principal Investigators that have focused their lives on understanding the immune system, determining the fundamental nature of autoimmune disease, and finding a cure.
    • An autoimmune disease biobank with over 200,000 individual samples available to research scientists, enabling critical discoveries in the foundations of autoimmune disease.
    • Access to clinical trial networks. Once potential therapeutics and diagnostics are identified, BRI can run clinical trials in one of the study networks we lead: Immune Tolerance Network, Diabetes TrialNet and T1D-Exchange Living Biobank.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The bioinformatics scientist will lead the analysis and presentation of large collections of clinical autoimmune disease profiling data from both public domain and institutional programs. This will require biostatistics skills in experimental design, data analysis, and visualization. Advanced level skills in disciplines such as biostatistics, bioinformatics, genome sciences, and statistics will be required. Experience in genomics, high-throughput sequence analysis, statistical data modeling, and data visualization is highly desirable. A solid command of statistical analysis tools is also essential.

The BRI collaborative research environment provides the opportunity to work across disciplines, with some of the leading researchers and clinicians in immunology. BRI research leadership has identified Bioinformatics as one of the key enabling technologies that will help them find the cure. This means that across BRI there is broad support for the collection, storage, integration, analysis, and visualization of research data.
