    Opportunity: Software Developer 3/4 -- Genome Portal (#80477) @ DOE Joint Genome Institute -- Walnut Creek, CA (US)

    BACKGROUND

    The Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI), a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has an exciting opportunity available for an experienced Software Developer/Engineer. Under general supervision, will identify client needs and requirements to develop, implement, test, integrate and deploy new and/or existing software applications. Will provide technical expertise with relational databases including; database administration, database design, and performance tuning. Will work on problems of a diverse scope, exercise independent judgment and select appropriate methods and techniques for solving and recommending solutions. Must demonstrate detailed knowledge and strong technical ability in full lifecycle software development, database design and access, web user interface design, development and deployment. Will interact will team members as well as technical, administrative, and scientific staff. Position reports to the Genome Portal Group Work Lead.

    Selected individual will be hired as a Software Developer 3 or Software Developer 4 based on the candidate's level of skills and qualifications.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Specific Job Duties:
    Essential-
    •  Design and develop software for the JGI's Informatics Department.
    •  Design effective solutions compatible with existing systems.
    •  Interface with end-users to gather feedback and requirements.
    •  Participate in system architectural review and design.
    •  Provide daily client support, including occasional evening and weekends.
    •  Apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse problems.
    •  Work with scientific and administrative customers to define needs and priorities.
    •  Observe and promote configuration management and deployment policies.
    •  Participate in formal and informal design and code reviews.
    Marginal-
    •  Represent the group's needs and interests in collaborative efforts with other groups and departments.
    •  Create documentation and training materials.
    •  Mentor and train other team members in areas of expertise
    In addition to the above, the following are Software Developer 4 responsibilities.
    •  Contribute at a higher level of independence and responsibilities.
    •  Perform as a key contributor and troubleshoot and solve highly technical, complex problems.
    •  Advocate for data management best practices in the organization.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Qualifications:
    Essential-
    •  B.S. in Computer Science, or a related technical or scientific field, or equivalent experience, and a minimum of 5 years related experience.
    •  Significant experience in software development and strong understanding of database programming and administration.
    •  Demonstrated success designing and implementing significant systems and software in a scientific or technical environment.
    •  Experience with modern programming languages (including Java, Perl, C++), expertise with web development: HTML, CSS and Javascript and ability to maintain existing Java and Perl applications.
    •  Effective time management, organization and planning skills.
    •  Experience working on large, complex software systems.
    •  Effective interpersonal communication, public-speaking, and presentation skills.
    •  Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills to independently make sound judgments and creative solutions to complex problems.
    •  Talent for working well under pressure and handling multiple tasks.
    •  Highly competent in the use of computers and related software programs; i.e., PC, Mac, and UNIX operating systems.
    •  Ability to work in a diverse team environment.
    •  Demonstrated ability to lead, direct and coach a technical team of software developers.
    Preferred-
    •  Experience with RIA and Ajax applications
    •  Experience with SOAP and web services.
    In addition to the above, the following are Software Developer 4 qualifications:
    •  Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science or related field plus a minimum of seven years of relevant experience, or overall equivalent; advanced degree (Masters/PhD) preferred.
    •  Proficiency with system and software design/implementation in a scientific or technical environment.
    •  Experience troubleshooting complex software issues.
    •  Experience with predictive analytics on text or unstructured data.
    •  Experience with deep learning or similar machine learning methodologies.

    TERMS

    This is a one year term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with the possibility of conversion to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Work will be performed at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA. Job may require occasional travel, weekend, and after-hours work.
