BACKGROUND

The NIEHS announces an exciting opportunity to head a dynamic office focused on the interface between cutting-edge information technology and scientific exploration, discovery, and translation. It is critical that our Institute is able to fully harness advances in scientific computing and science information technology to meet our research mission. We are seeking an outstanding leader who will create an environment where information technology catalyzes our research programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Division of Intramural Research is seeking an accomplished scientist in information technology to take on a leadership position as the NIEHS Scientific Information Officer (SIO). This individual will head the Office of the Scientific Information Officer (OSIO) and will lead a team that is directly focused on intramural scientific information technology. Responsibilities include strategic planning and management, scientific computing, training, and functioning as a liaison with other parts of the NIH, other federal agencies, and with other organizations. The successful candidate will coordinate with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the Director of the Office of Scientific Information Management (OSIM) to establish and maintain a science information technology infrastructure that supports a vast variety of biomedical computing needs.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) with a record of accomplishment in information technology support to a scientific enterprise as well as application to basic and clinical research. The position, due to its cross-cutting nature, requires an individual who is highly collaborative, comfortable tackling information technology interests in a scientifically diverse environment, has strong oral and written communication skills, can build and manage a team, and who keeps abreast of the most current technological advances in support of both scientific and business information technology strategy. Knowledge of the following areas is highly desired: academic and federal scientific culture, information technology solution development in the research and research administration space, government information technology security principles, clinical and basic research data management strategies, high performance computing systems, scientific- and data-driven computational approaches, and content management systems.

COMPENSATION

The salary range for Scientific Information Officer is dependent upon the appointment position as either a Staff Scientist – 2 or Senior Scientist, $158,701 - $204,000. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life and long term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) is available.
