BACKGROUND

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

EMBL is seeking for a talented software developer to join a startup-style interdisciplinary research team working at one of the highest ranked research organisations at the interplay of big data crunching, image analysis, and bioinformatics.

The project aims to create an open-source online engine for molecular annotation of big data from imaging mass spectrometry. The postholder will be further involved in software development and data management tasks related to the big data research projects of the Alexandrov team. This would also require working with scientists on a cutting-edge research project, architect, design and implement the infrastructure and the engine, implement both the backend and frontend using big data tech, and deploy it onto HPC-infrastructure (10K nodes cluster, Amazon WS).

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Experience:
Analytical skills, experience in developing and delivering software products either in a company or in a comparable environment in academia are required. Knowledge of biology or bioinformatics is not required for this position. Expertise in software engineering, modern big data technologies (MapReduce, Hadoop, Spark, Cassandra, HBase), HPC, efficient algorithms, Python, JavaScript, image analysis and machine learning will be an asset.
