    BACKGROUND

The Knowledge Systems and Data Science Group seeks an Associate Director, Chief Software Architect to lead the development of multiple opensource data mining and analytics platforms for precision (or "personalized") cancer medicine.

    If you:
    • Dream of big data
    • Enjoy building big, complex software systems
    • Thrive working within a creative team of scientists and engineers
    • Want to contribute to open source
    • Want to use your skills to make a positive impact on cancer care, and
    • Want to take a leadership role at the ground floor of multiple new initiatives
... we want to talk with you.

The Associate Director, Chief Software Architect is an exceptional candidate who has both deep bioinformatics experience and extensive software architecture experience. We operate at the crossroads of cancer genomics, software, and data science and are looking for that rare individual who has experience and passion for all three. Our platforms are focused on mining of cancer genomic data sets, understanding resistance to targeted therapy, matching genomic profiles to clinical trials, and identifying exceptional responders to targeted therapy. Technical and scientific challenges for the platform include data mining and visualization of large scale cancer genomic data sets, extracting information from natural language text and building web-based data analytics platforms.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Designing and architecting all new software platforms within the Knowledge Systems and Data Science group
    • Leading engineering efforts for all new software platforms
    • Leading engineering efforts for multiple open source projects, including cbioportal.org and oncoblocks.org
    • Staying abreast of new technologies and data science advances that may impact future work within the group, and setting an overall strategy for adoption of new technologies
    • Maintaining best practices and industry standards for all bioinformatics software developed within the group
    • Representing the Knowledge Systems and Data Science Group across DanaFaber and with external collaborations
    • Mentoring bioinformatics engineers within the group

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor's degree, Masters Degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related field
    • 5+ years of bioinformatics software engineering experience, preferably in the cancer genomics space
    • Expert knowledge of Java and Spring
    • Strong interest in contributing to biological research with clinical applications
    • Experience in modern software development technologies, including distributed versioning systems, continuous integration, and Agile programming practices
    • Data science expertise, including statistical analysis and data mining
The candidate must demonstrate outstanding personal initiative and the ability to work effectively with and lead a team of bioinformatics software engineers. Ability to meet deadlines and efficiently multitask is a must.
