    BACKGROUND

    You will carry out microbiome research on cystic fibrosis, funded by The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and NIH (1R15HL126122-01). This is the first year of a longitudinal study (initially funded for two to three years, renewable) aimed at identifying changes in the lung bacterial and viral community of approximately 15 adolescent CF patients that reflect overall health, predict onset of a pulmonary exacerbation, and examine antibiotic efficacy.     RESPONSIBILITIES

    The employee will be the senior member of Professor Steck's research group, supporting projects through original research, mentoring of students, and contributing to additional proposal efforts.

    The employee's principal research responsibilities will be performing sputum sample processing, qPCR, metagenomic Illumina sequencing , and analysis of resulting data. The employee will have considerable independence and influence on the project, will publish research results, share student mentoring with Professor Steck, and interact with project collaborators and participants.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, Microbiology or any related field
    • Experimental and theoretical background with basic microbiology techniques, qPCR, metagenomics DNA sequencing, and bioinformatics data analysis
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to exercise scientific judgment on a day-to-day basis, evaluate experimental data and observations, written literature documentation, and oral communications, and use this information to make judgments about what steps will next lead to progress in the project

    COMPENSATION

    Salary will be between $36,600 and $42,000 per year, excluding fringe benefits
