    BACKGROUND

    SRA, a leading provider of bioinformatics services and staff to the US Government, is seeking a Bioinformatics Software Engineer to join our team in support of the NIH. This position requires a variety of software development skills, including database skills in SQL, as well as knowledge of multiple programming languages such as some combination of Python, Perl, Java, R, PHP, etc., in a Linux environment. Position is for full time employment with SRA, and will be based at our client's office on the NIH Main Campus in Bethesda, MD.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Key Responsibilities include:
    • Use IT and scientific computing to drive computational analysis of scientific data sets across a variety of biomedical science domains at the National Institutes of Health, often by adapting algorithms to fit research analysis needs.
    • Develop software applications and pipelines using a variety of programming languages working collaboratively in an agile-like environment.
    • Develop and maintain extensions for a MediaWiki-based platform.
    • Need to be well-rounded and adaptable to a small team environment, with excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Conduct unit- and integration-tests to achieve acceptable software quality.
    • Decompose high-level business and user requirements into functional requirements.
    • Resolve technical issues through debugging, research, and investigation.
    • Responsible for version control / documentation of artifacts produced through approved procedures and protocols.
    • Work closely with technical project leadership and client to plan, develop, and deliver system modernization, enhancement, and operations and maintenance capabilities.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelors degree and 3+ years relevant professional experience in variety of bioinformatics, computational analysis, and/or grant data analysis (ideally with NIH). Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
    • Position requires a variety of software development skills - including database skills in PostgreSQL and Oracle, as well as knowledge of multiple programming languages such as more than 1 of the following programming languages: Python, Perl, Java, R, or PHP, etc.
    • Experience working in a Unix or Linux environment
    • End-to-end development experience in an Agile environment
    • Proficiency in object-oriented and responsive web design
    • SQL design skills and experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, or other relational database products. Working knowledge of NoSQL database technologies is a plus.
    • Hands on experience with additional tools such as - Subversion (SVN), PHPUnit, Selenium, Lucene, and/or Ant.
    • Strong problem identification and analytical skills
    • Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to create and deliver clear reports and documentation.

    PREFERENCES

    • Experience working in small teams
    • Experience working with scientific data a plus
    • Knowledge of computational biology and bioinformatics is a plus.
    • Working knowledge of PHP, Javascript (jQuery/AJAX), HTML5, and CSS3 (additional skills in SVG is a plus)
    • Degree in computer science, information systems, bioinformatics or related fields is preferred.
