Opportunity: Bioinformatics Research Analyst (#PB-S073-621) @ Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation -- Ardmore, OK (US)
Submitted by Lindsey Ramon; posted on Monday, July 20, 2015

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The Plant Biology Division of the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. in Ardmore Oklahoma, is seeking a Bioinformatics Research Analyst to develop innovative methods, tools and bioinformatics systems to investigate and decipher the plant genotype-phenotype (G2P) associations through integrative genome-scale biological network and genome-wide association analysis. The successful candidate will focus on the development of novel algorithms/models and new tools 1) to mine large-scale plant functional "omics", genotypic , and phenotypic data to study how genome-scale gene regulatory networks regulate biological processes, pathways, and complex traits; and 2) to enable precise, genome wide molecular marker-trait association analysis in plants by incorporating novel statistical genetics approaches. Other duties will include but are not limited to maintaining and further developing our integrative platform to study gene function and genome evolution in plants (e.g. http://plantgrn.noble.org/LegumeIP/), of which some functions will be incorporated into our ongoing development of knowledge discovery platform (http://plantgrn.noble.org/hrgrn/) for the integration, deciphering, and discovery of plant gene networks, genotype and phenotype associations. This research will be conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Xuechun Zhao and examples of related bioinformatics tool and data resource published by the Zhao Lab can be found on one of the Zhao Lab's project websites at http://plantgrn.noble.org.

The successful candidate will also work with a team of scientists that include computational biologists, bioinformaticians, plant genome science researchers, breeders and other computer scientists to develop a comprehensive Alfalfa Breeder's Toolbox that integrates Alfalfa genome sequences with gene expression, molecular markers, linkage maps, and associations between genotypic and phenotypic data for target traits. The Alfalfa Breeder's Toolbox is one of flagship projects that are highlighted in the Noble Foundation new initiative entitled Forage365, which aims to provide year-round grazing system (see news release at http://www.noble.org/news/news-releases/2014/14-038/).

    REQUIREMENTS

M.S. degree in computer science, electronic engineering or related bioinformatics and computational biology science field with 2 year of experience in bioinformatics, and/or genomics, and/or genetics required.

    PREFERENCES

    • Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Electronic Engineering, Genomics, Biochemistry, Plant Biology or other highly-related discipline
    • Independent problem solving skills along with comprehensive knowledge related to mathematics, computer programming and algorithm implementation (e.g. familiar with statistics, machine learning, and optimization)
    • Programming skills with C/C++, Java, Matlab, R, and SQL using MySQL Server; and efficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems with experience in developing large-scale data analysis systems and scientific databases
    • Understanding of the basic biological principles and the ability to develop biological insight applications
    • Have good communication skills, strong team-work spirit, and self-learning abilities

    HOW TO APPLY

Applicants are requested to apply online by completing the application and submitting a current CV, contact information for three references (excluding relatives) who address your skills and abilities in science, and a cover letter explaining interest in the position and career goals. If applicant does not have the ability to upload the additional documents they can be faxed to (580) 224-6240 (please include position number), but the application should be completed and submitted online. Applications will be accepted until a candidate is hired. Interested applicants should apply immediately.
