BACKGROUND
The Vaginal Microbiome Consortium at Virginia Commonwealth University (vmc.vcu.edu) has an exciting opportunity available for a Computational Biology Postdoc. The research will directly leverage resources and available multi-omic data for systems-level characterization of alterations at the maternal host-microbiome interface. The focus will be on comparative analysis of omics datasets and systems-level analyses of alterations at the maternal host-microbiome interface predictive of spontaneous preterm birth and other adverse pregnancy outcomes. In collaboration with the analysis team, the candidate will also participate in developing new strategies for analysis of longitudinal multi-omic data sets and biomarkers predictive of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The qualified candidate will both work independently and contribute as a member of the analysis team in the context of a larger dynamic, multidisciplinary team of clinicians, biologists, bioinformaticists, statisticians, and software developers. The position will report to Drs. Gregory Buck and Jennifer Fettweis.RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interrogate and interpret microbial genomes, metagenomes and other omics data including metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, metabolomics, cytokines, human exomes/genomes
- Apply standard bioinformatics tools for genome/metagenome analysis
- Design and implement new approaches for genome/metagenome/metatranscriptome analysis
- Contribute to design of new methodologies for longitudinal, multi-omic analysis
- Publish in peer review journals and deliver scientific presentations at scientific meetings
REQUIREMENTS
The ideal applicant will have earned a PhD in Biology, Microbiology, Bioinformatics or a related field within the last 4 years and possess a demonstrated understanding of bioinformatics with a background in molecular biology, genomics, and/or microbial ecology. The candidate will have experience in UNIX utilities and filesystems and use of bioinformatics to analyze large datasets. Strong experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, Perl, R) and familiarity with SQL is preferred. Previous experience in multi-omics, genomics, metagenomics or microbial ecology is required. The qualified candidate will possess the ability to independently carry out creative research with tenacity and the highest quality standard and thrive in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.TERMS
This is a 1-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing needs. Work will be performed at VCU in Richmond, VA. Job may require occasional travel, weekend and after-hours work.ABOUT US

The Vaginal Microbiome Consortium is a highly interdisciplinary team in which clinicians, microbiologists, computational biologists, bioinformaticists, statisticians, genomic scientists, and human geneticists work collaboratively to analyze, interpret and publish our findings. Thousands of women have already contributed samples and information to the VMC. We believe this large-scale, innovative effort will lead to insights into how the microbiome impacts risk for preterm birth and the temporal dynamics of the pregnancy microbiome.LOCALE
