Opportunity: Bioinformatician @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK
Submitted by Sam Bowker; posted on Wednesday, July 29, 2015

    BACKGROUND

We have an opportunity for a computer science graduate or a MSc Bioinformatics graduate to join the Sanger Institute as a member of the Deciphering Developmental Disorders Informatics team. The post is for one year and would suite an enthusiastic relative newcomer to the field, providing an exciting opportunity to develop their technical skill set and bioinformatics knowledge on a cutting edge project with an international profile.

This post would suite a candidate with a strong aptitude for programming, e.g. using Perl, Python or Java, or perhaps the R statistical programming language. Experience of working in a Linux command line environment and of working with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL or MySQL) will be an advantage.

The aim of DDD is to advance clinical genetic practice for children with developmental disorders by the systematic application of the latest high throughput sequencing and microarray methods. This is a "big data" project and the successful candidate will gain experience of working with a massive Linux based cluster to perform large-scale computation in a parallel manner.

No knowledge or experience of next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS) technologies is required for this position as in-post training and support will be provided for the candidate.

    ABOUT US

The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre that applies the power of genomics to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. We conduct science at a scale and speed that sets our research apart. Our passion is to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.

The Institute is located near Cambridge on the stunning Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation, a Biodata Innovation Centre and will soon host Genomics England Limited's 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre. It is an excellent environment in which to work and collaborate with researchers on campus and around the world and benefit from cross-fertilisation of ideas.

To help researchers to develop their skills and networks, the Institute hosts a range of scientific seminars with internal and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops. In addition the Campus is home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.
