BACKGROUND

The University of Arizona is seeking applicants for a full time, tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor in Virology, with a research interest that encompasses bioinformatics/genomics. The successful applicant will be expected to develop a competitively funded research program and contribute to teaching in the UA microbiology undergraduate program. The position is a joint hire between the UA College of Agriculture's School of Animal & Comparative Biomedical Sciences (ACBS) and the BIO5 Institute.

The BIO5 Institute has a focus of big data, genomics and interdisciplinary research so it is essential that the successful candidate have an interest in genomics, bio-informatics or a related area. The BIO5 Institute has modern laboratory spaces in the open plan design and includes core facilities for genomics, biostats, proteomics and biocomputing. It is supported by the Dean's from 5 Colleges: Agriculture, Medicine, Science, Engineering and Pharmacy.

The School of Animal & Comparative Biomedical Sciences (ACBS) is relatively new and integrates the former Depts of Veterinary Science and Microbiology & Animal Sciences; this gives the faculty some exciting opportunities to develop new, collaborative projects around biomedical research, environmental stressors that affect physiology, infectious disease and One Health. ACBS faculty research interests that may tie in with a new virology hire include study of human and animal microbiome, how the environment impacts the virome and infectious disease and impacts of zoonotic disease. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach a upper level virology class for undergraduate microbiology majors.

The UA College of Agriculture is also in the process of establishing Arizona's first Veterinary School and ACBS faculty are likely to have new research opportunities within this context. This faculty position also has a startup package to support the development of a research program at ACBS (to be negotiated as part of the position offer).

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful applicant will develop a research program that enhances the University of Arizona's strengths in animal/human health, viral pathogenesis, and virome and microbiome role in health and disease.

The candidate will be expected to develop and sustain a strong, externally funded research program in animal or human health, teach in the undergraduate and graduate curricula; mentor undergraduate and graduate students; and provide service and leadership to the University of Arizona, external academic and scientific communities, and to the general public.

As a BIO5 fellow, the candidate is expected to participate in BIO5 interdisciplinary projects with scientists from CALS and from other UA Colleges.

REQUIREMENTS

Must have a Ph.D. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology/Immunology or a related discipline with emphasis on virology.

PREFERENCES

Preferred education and experience include post-doctoral research experience, a publication record commensurate with experience, demonstration of collaborative research that crosses disciplines, and a record of excellence in teaching or mentoring.
