Opportunity: Post Doctoral Researcher -- genomic screening to functional and clinical interpretation @ University of Sheffield School of Medicine, UK
Submitted by Win Hide; posted on Tuesday, August 11, 2015

    BACKGROUND

We seek an exceptionally talented individual who relishes a challenge and cares deeply about making an impact on the health of people with incurable diseases.

We invite applications for a Post Doctoral Research Fellowship in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Sheffield School of Medicine in the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN). The Hide Laboratory offers a position at the Centre for Genome Translation https://hidelab.wordpress.com. SITraN is a purpose built research and houses computational, clinical and basic scientists with a focus on neurodegenerative disorders.

The Centre is recruiting a unique team made up of experts and trainees in human genetics and genomics, genome informatics, network modelling, computational biology and drug repositioning. We work closely with basic scientists, animal model specialists, and physician scientists to build and apply infrastructure and methods that deliver new drug targets and personalised interventions for complex and polygenic diseases.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

We seek an exceptionally talented individual who relishes a challenge and cares deeply about making an impact on the health of people with incurable diseases.

You will work within the concept of prioritising and interpreting genomic variants detected by WGS and exome screening in polygenic diseases. With the abilty to develop appropriate methodology and also to apply best practice agorithms to these datasets, you will address transect and longitudinal studies to incorporate genomic variants, array and RNAseq and protein protein interaction networks to build modules of interacting genes that have a high probability of contribution to the disease phenotype. You will be open to developing novel methods that improve the ability to prioritise clinically actionable variants. You will be interested in development of predictive criteria for disease onset and outcome.

With the goal of generating testable translatable discoveries, you will leverage access to quantitative phenotype and functional and genetic data from subjects, iPSC cell derived models, mouse model and fly models to generate targets for prioritisation.

The new lab at Sheffield works in close collaboration with Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard Stem Cell Institute and Biogen Idec in Cambridge, USA and Sheffield departments of Computer Sciences and Neuroscience as well as Sheffield Hallamshire Hospital.

    REQUIREMENTS

You have a high calibre PhD (or equivalent qualification) in computational biology, biomedical research, genomics, computer science, mathematics, biostatistics, systems biology or combination of these. You have a strong biological background, and are skilled in scripting with demonstrated understanding of working together with biomedical researchers and quantitative computational biologists. You are confident in genetic analyses, genome screens exome scans and associated technologies. You can address aspects of data integration and are enthusiastic about construction and analysis of biological networks. Highly motivated, you wish to work in a stimulating, international, scientific environment. You have excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills and seek exposure to a diversity of scientific projects. Interested applicants should send a current curriculum vitae and research statement to Professor Hide.
