Opportunity: Computational Biologist (#INF004610) @ Merck -- West Point, PA (US)
Submitted by Joshua Nelson; posted on Friday, August 28, 2015

    BACKGROUND

Merck & Co., Inc., known as Merck in the US and Canada and MSD across the rest of the world, is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. Today, we are building a new kind of healthcare company – one that is ready to help create a healthier future for all of us.

Our ability to excel depends on the integrity, knowledge, imagination, skill, diversity and teamwork of an individual like you. To this end, we strive to create an environment of mutual respect, encouragement and teamwork. As part of our global team, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with talented and dedicated colleagues while developing and expanding your career.

The Merck Biologics, Genetics and Informatics IT department (BGIx) works closely with the Genetics and Pharmacogenomics (GpGx) group in Merck Research Labs (MRL) to develop novel therapies grounded in human genetics, including the identification of new therapeutic targets and the development of clinical genomic biomarkers. The BGIx group seeks to significantly expand its team, by adding three bioinformatics and computational biology experts to support expanding research efforts in this area. Specifically we seek individuals to partner with GpGx and assist with: 1) analysis of large-scale human genome sequencing efforts for target discovery, 2) design and analysis of custom sequencing experiments to support target validation (single-cell sequencing, long-read technologies, multiplex screening approaches, etc.), 3) integration and analysis of data from diverse sources including microarray expression and genotyping, NGS-based experiments, flow cytometry, and clinical endpoints, and 4) management of genomic and genetic data from pre-clinical and clinical programs.

Each member of the BGIx team serves as a vital bridge between diverse research groups in MRL and the Merck IT organization. We provide direct support and technical assistance to our partner groups, and we also coordinate the development and provision of IT solutions for those groups, including licensed software as well as tools developed internally or acquired through external partnerships. The successful candidate will serve the research organization by directly implementing solutions, as well as by identifying, evaluating, and executing on external investments, including both academic collaborations and commercial partnerships.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary activities include, but are not limited to:
    • Partner with groups in GpGx to deliver solutions for their analytics, informatics, and IT needs.
    • Maintain cutting-edge expertise in multiple fields of science and technology related to genomics, and serve as a thought leader for Merck in these areas.
    • Identify, implement, and develop tools for analysis of NGS and other data types to address a wide range of scientific questions.
    • Develop business cases to support strategic investments.
    • Partner with external companies and academic collaborators to deliver maximum value to the organization.
    • Work with software engineers within the larger global IT organization to prioritize and implement solutions to business needs.
    • Communicate effectively across the research and informatics organizations.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Education Minimum Requirement:

    • Ability to grasp complex problems and deliver creative, practical solutions
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work well in a geographically diverse setting, and to balance scientific and business needs
    • Ability to work in a team of multidisciplinary scientists and IT personnel, and operate effectively in a matrix environment; team player yet able to work independently with minimal direction
    • Extensive experience with data analysis, esp. involving large complex data sets
    Preferred Experience and Skills:
    • Substantial computational experience including a combination of scripting, programming, database design, and statistical analysis, as well as familiarity with cluster and cloud-based computing environments
    • Deep understanding of key genomics technologies, esp. next-gen sequencing
    • Strong background in molecular biology and genetics, esp. as related to disease and drug development
    • Ability to implement published NGS analysis methods and to customize them to address specific biological questions
