    BACKGROUND:
    Two exciting opportunities to perform integrative cancer genomics research are available to highly motivated and skilled candidates.

    Our research/The group:
    As a newly started group at the Finsen Laboratory and Biotech Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC), we combine computational and molecular biology approaches to study cancer. A particular focus is to gain a better understanding of the functional consequences of large-scale somatic Structural Variants (SVs), such as deletions and translocations in cancer and how these changes affect gene regulatory networks. SVs can alter the cis-regu­latory landscape to deregulate gene networks by disrupting the higher dimensional structure of the genome, e.g. by altering the cis-regulatory landscape. We combine data generation from in vitro model systems with data analysis from large-scale cancer genomics data.

    The identification of key mutational events also allows novel drug-targeting opportunities. We are collaborating with prostate cancer clinicians with the long-term goal to provide personalized therapeutic intervention options for clinical decision-making.

    The Weischenfeldt group is affiliated with the Finsen Laboratory (http://www.finsenlab.dk) at Rigshospitalet as well as BRIC (http://www.bric.ku.dk), University of Copenhagen.

    The research projects:
    A computational-driven project and a molecular biology-driven project are available in the group.

    The positions offer the opportunity to develop novel methods and computational approaches to enable comparisons of thousands of cancer genomes in the context of whole genome pan-cancer studies (PanCancer Analysis of Whole Genomes, https://dcc.icgc.org/pcawg), with which our group is actively involved.

    We are aiming to leverage such omics-based information to provide treatment alternatives to cancer patients, and the candidates will be involved in analysing and developing such approaches in collaboration with clinical oncologists.

    This new area offers exciting opportunities, ranging from the development of compu­ta­tional genomics-driven and statistical algorithms for primary data analysis to data integra­tion and systems-level inference of relevance for the future of precision medicine.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The successful applicants will be actively involved several aspects:
    • Recreate SVs in model systems using genome editing tools
    • Study functional consequences using ChIP-Seq and 3C-seq methods
    • Integrative analysis of cancer genomics data across more than 25 cancer types
    • Develop methods to identify druggable targets from genomics data ('precision medicine').
    REQUIREMENTS:
    Qualifications:
    We are looking for two highly motivated and ambitious PhD-level candidates, either with a background in computational biology or molecular biology who are interested in being actively involved in the generation, design and analysis of large-scale cancer genomic data and their integration with clinical phenotypes. The candidates will address novel research questions at the intersection of computational genomics and clinical cancer research.

    Prior expertise in the analysis of next-generation sequencing data will be considered as a plus. Good collaborative interactions with other team members and excellent English skills written and spoken are required.

    Computational biologist: The successful candidate should hold a PhD, and should have carried out PhD research in computational biology, bioinformatics, physics, computer science or related areas. Documented experience in data analysis and ability to perform multidisciplinary work covering computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, genome analysis is mandatory as well as experience in data analysis and familiarity with programming languages (e.g. R, Python, Perl).

    Molecular biologist: The successful candidate should hold a PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology or related areas. Documented experience in cloning, cell culture and ability to perform multidisciplinary work covering molecular biology is mandatory.

    TERMS:
    Start: Autumn 2015 or after agreement
    Duration: 3 years

    Terms of salary and employment:
    Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central organization. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 32.095 DKK/ca. 4.250 Euro plus pension. Depending on qualifi­cations, a higher salary may be negotiated.

    Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

    The position is covered by the "Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Univer­sities" of June 28, 2013.

    The employment is at BRIC, University of Copenhagen, while place of work will be Finsen Laboratory - both located in the Biocenter, close to the centre of Copenhagen.     The further process:
    Shortlist: After expiry of the application deadline, the superior with power to appoint selects a number of applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.
