    DESCRIPTION

    A Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computational Genomics is available immediately at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). We are seeking for an outstanding candidate to conduct research on extreme conservation in eukaryotic genomes. The project seeks to address a fundamental problem of finding regions of eukaryotic genomes that share a remarkable property: when compared between genomes of two and more species, the sequences from these regions appear identical or perhaps with a very small number of mutations. Discovered more than 10 years ago as ultra-conserved elements (UCEs), the origins of this phenomenon and its functional implications for the living organisms remain a mystery. A successful candidate is expected to: (1) develop algorithms that take a full benefit of the kind of biological data being processed and the type of hardware that it is run on, and (2) apply these algorithms to study the evolution of eukaryotic genomes and decipher the functional roles of extreme elements.

Offering a comprehensive line of degrees (BS, MS, and PHD), the program is in close collaboration with the PhD program in bioinformatics and computational biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, sharing courses and multi-lab projects.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Applied Mathematics, Genomics, or related fields
    • Experience in genomics research
    • Strong programming skills (C, C++, Python, Perl, MatLab)
    • Demonstrated knowledge of string-based algorithms
    • A track-record of publication in peer-reviewed journals
    • Strong personal and communication skills
    • Ability to work in a team

    PREFERENCES

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Strong research background in computational genomics and genetics
    • Experience in developing advanced algorithms for genomic data
    • Experience in using Big Data tools (Hadoop/MapReduce/Impala) and/or parallel computing
    • Experience in developing web-servers

    TERMS

    Expected duration: 2 years, extendable to 3 years
