    DESCRIPTION

The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute (http://www.cruk.manchester.ac.uk), an Institute of The University of Manchester (http://www.manchester.ac.uk), is a world-leading centre for excellence in cancer research. The Institute is core funded by Cancer Research UK (http://www.cancerresearchuk.org), the largest independent cancer research organisation in the world. We are adjacent to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (http://www.christie.nhs.uk), one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe. These factors combine to provide an exceptional environment in which to pursue basic, translational and clinical research programmes.

Our aim is to understand the fundamental basis of cancer and apply that knowledge to developing new treatment strategies for cancer patients. Our advanced research programmes span a spectrum of cancer research, from the molecular and cellular basis of cancer through to drug discovery, translational research and clinical trials.

The Institute has outstanding laboratory facilities and exceptional core services, including next generation sequencing, microarrays, confocal microscopy, computational biology, histology and mass-spectrometry.

We are situated in Manchester, England, a vibrant and dynamic city that is surrounded by beautiful countryside and has excellent transport links both nationally and internationally.

We are seeking a highly motivated computational biologist to join our Computational Biology Support Team. The post holder will work with a range of high throughput genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics data generated by our on-site facilities and will make extensive use of our own 2,000 core HPC cluster that resides in a dedicated water cooled machine room on site. The successful candidate will work in an exciting and dynamic environment to address novel questions at the interface between state of the art technology and cancer biology.

Together with Queen's University Belfast, we have recently been awarded a Movember Centre of Excellence for prostate cancer research. The post holder will join an established team of computational biologists to work collaboratively with members of the Prostate Cancer UK Movember Centre of Excellence to process and analyse imaging, deep sequencing and proteomics data. This post would suit a biologist with bioinformatics experience or a computer scientist with a strong interest in cancer biology. Excellent communication skills and an ability to work effectively within a highly collaborative environment are critical, as is a basic grounding in the statistics of `omics data.

The successful candidate will hold a degree in computational biology, mathematics or related discipline (or equivalent relevant experience) along with relevant experience analysing genomics data OR other relevant postgraduate degree in Computer Science.
