As innovators in child health, we lead and partner to improve the health of children through the integration of healthcare, leading-edge research and education. Our reputation would not have been built – nor could it be maintained – without the skills, knowledge and experience of the extraordinary people who come to work here every day. SickKids is committed to ongoing learning and development, and features a caring and supportive work environment that combines exceptionally high standards of practice.
When you join SickKids, you become part of our community. We share a commitment and determination to fulfill our vision of Healthier Children. A Better World.
Don't miss out on the opportunity to work alongside the world's best in paediatric healthcare.
Bioinformatician:
Are you a bioinformatician interested in using your expertise in gathering and analyzing information to help improve the lives of children? Are you interested in working alongside world experts and being a part of an esteemed program dedicated to finding new therapies for heart failure? Would you enjoy being an integral member of an organization dedicated to providing excellence and innovation in patient care, research, and education?
The Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research (TRCHR) Precision Cardiac Medicine Program at SickKids is seeking a motivated Senior Bioinformatician who is experienced in dealing with very large volumes of genomic data with strong computer programming skills. This work will be performed in our research laboratory which is dedicated to identifying the genetic causes of heart failure, cardiomyopathies and congenital heart disease.
The Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research is a newly formed centre in Toronto, Canada, created from one of the largest monetary gifts ever made by the Rogers family of $130 million to bring together three world class institutes: Hospital for Sick Children, University Health Network, and University of Toronto, with the goal of finding new therapies for heart failure. As part of this Centre, the SickKids Program in Precision Medicine will harness the power of genomics and stem cells to develop personalized medicine strategies for patients with heart failure. The program will sequence the genomes of several thousand individuals with heart failure. Genetically characterized patient iPSCs will be differentiated into cardiovascular lineages to identify the molecular signature of childhood onset heart failure and to perform high throughput drug screens to identify new drug therapies.

- Familiarity with specific laboratory or core facility processes, guidelines, and tools (e.g. sequence alignment, variant annotation)
- Experience with computer operating systems (e.g., UNIX, Windows), programming and scripting (e.g., R, Python, Perl), data storage, management and analysis (SQL, SAS)
- Experience with data visualization and presentation tools
- Excellent communication skills and thrive in a collaborative team
- Candidates who possess knowledge and education in a biology-related field as well as computing will be preferred.
- Knowledge and familiarity with genetics and cardiovascular biology is an asset.
