Opportunity: HPC Systems Administrator @ University of Oxford, UK
Submitted by NDORMS, University of Oxford; posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2016

    BACKGROUND

Are you interested in establishing and managing a state-of-the-art HPC facility to enable cutting-edge research? This is an unusual opportunity to develop your experience and skills as part of a friendly team supporting research staff and students at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology (KIR).

The KIR is a world-class research centre located in brand new premises next to the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at the University of Oxford. It has invested in a high-specification HPC facility (>20 TFLOPs) to support research increasingly reliant on computational genomics and big-data analysis.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

As the KIR HPC Systems Administrator you will be responsible for developing and maintaining the new HPC facility and supporting its users. Working with the Research Informatics team you will also help maintain existing IT platforms and provide occasional desktop support.

To succeed in this role you will need strong experience and excellent understanding of Linux Systems administration. Training in the administration of HPC will be provided by the University's Advanced Research Computing Team as required. An enthusiastic team player, you value quality of service, have an eye for detail and respond positively to new challenges.

This is a longer-term opportunity initially funded until 31/07/2018. Post renewal is dependent on the continuation of project funding. We anticipate the KIR's HPC requirements will grow and that this post will continue for a significant period of time.

If appointed you will build relationships with the Medical Sciences Division IT Services Team and the University's Advanced Research Computing Team. The University is committed to supporting and developing its staff - our department is a recipient of the Athena Swan Silver Award.

    Duties:
    • Implementing and administering a high-performance compute and storage platform, including the management of job scheduling systems, in consultation with the line manager(s) and user groups
    • Managing the broader IT infrastructure of the KIR. This will include managing the acquisition, deployment and maintenance of servers, operating systems, databases and web hosting infrastructure
    • Installing and maintaining application (e.g. bioinformatics) software in consultation with KIR research scientists. Assist in the purchasing of this software as required
    • Setup, configuration and administration of Linux operating systems
    • Assisting in the definition, implementation and review of system-wide security policies and procedures to ensure the Kennedy Institute meets ethical and legal obligations in line with University-wide policy
    • The definition and review of backup and disaster recovery procedures; ensuring high availability of information systems and mitigating risk of data loss due to hardware or software failure
    • Maintenance and development of monitoring systems (e.g. check mk/Nagios or Icinga); resolution of any issues that arise with existing information systems or infrastructure
    • Acting as the local domain HPC expert and to interface with the ARC support service in providing this local knowledge. Working with ARC, and leverage ARC training, for the benefit of local researchers. Helping to develop tailored versions of training materials for the Institute with support from ARC as appropriate
    • Keeping accurate, up-date and accessible written records (electronic or otherwise) of system configuration and development work
    • Assisting with desktop PC/Mac support as required
    Relationships:
    • The Kennedy Institute HPC Systems Administrator reports to the Research Informatics PI and the Group Leader in Computational Genomics.
    • The post-holder will work closely with all members of the Kennedy Institute Research Informatics and Computational Genomics teams.
    • The post-holder will act as an ARC (Advanced Research Computing) Associate enabling interaction between local researchers and IT staff and the IT Services ARC team where appropriate. Support and training will be available from this team with regards to the Institute's HPC platform.
    • The post-holder will work with the divisional MSD-ITS team and take part in University special interest groups where appropriate.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Essential:
    • A Bachelor degree in a related discipline such as computer science, or equivalent experience
    • Experience of implementing and managing Linux clusters and storage in a scientific environment
    • Experience of Linux network/systems administration, ideally within Red Hat/CentOS
    • Detailed understanding of the security issues in setting up desktops, servers and websites
    • Shell (BASH) scripting skills, experience with either Python or PERL and proficiency in a lower level language such as C++, Fortran or LISP
    • Excellent problem solving ability with the skills to diagnose complex hardware or software problems, such as network issues and performance problems
    • Excellent organisational, record keeping and documentation skills
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with people at all levels of seniority, bridging between the Institute's scientists' needs and implementation in an effective manner
    • Experience of managing Windows and Mac desktop systems including the use of Microsoft Office
    • Self-motivated, quick learner, able to work unsupervised using own initiative to solve problems and also to contribute as an effective member of the team
    • A disciplined and professional approach to work. Ability to multi-task and work to deadlines
    • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
    Desirable:
    • Experience maintaining a VMware virtual platform
    • Experience of MySQL database administration. Competent with SQL
    • Strong Python programming skills
    • Experience in administering and provisioning storage infrastructure including the use of GPFS, NFS and Infiniband
    • Experience with Sun Grid Engine, SLURM or similar task scheduling system
    • Previous employment in academic sector and/or interest in current issues in bioinformatics and genomics
    • Previous responsibility for hardware specification or procurement
