Opportunity: Bioinformatician/Senior Bioinformatician @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK
Submitted by Sam Bowker; posted on Thursday, March 10, 2016

    DESCRIPTION

Highly motivated Software Developer/Bioinformatician to support research into targeted cancer therapies.

A unique opportunity has arisen for you to take an important role in developing the informatics resources to support our research. Working closely with our lab team you will help develop our laboratory tracking and data processing systems. You will also be expected to play a part in the analysis and presentation of the data in collaboration with our international partners.

Our systems are designed to facilitate data sharing within the institute, with our international collaborators, and with the wider scientific community via our website http://www.cancerrxgene.org. A flexible approach is required since the role encompasses all stages of software development from initial design to support; however, in the initial stages the role can be adapted to suit the skillset of the applicant.

The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary team environment to help solve complex IT issues which will ultimately aid our understanding of cancer.

    Background:
The Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer project (http://www.cancerRxgene.org) aims to identify molecular features of human cancers that predict response to anti-cancer therapies. To achieve our goal, we are screening a wide range of anti-cancer therapeutics against a large number of genetically characterized human cancer cell lines and correlating drug sensitivity with extensive genetic data.

We have the world's largest public database of cancer drug sensitivity data as well as a wealth of genetic information from human tumours and cancer cell lines. This information can be used to improve the efficacy of cancer treatment by finding those patients most likely to benefit from a specific therapy.

    ABOUT US

The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease. We use state of the art large-scale genomic approaches to drive world-leading projects to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. Our goal is to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.

The Institute is located near Cambridge, UK on the stunning Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation, a Biodata Innovation Centre and will soon host Genomics England Limited's 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre. It is an excellent environment in which to work and collaborate with researchers on campus and around the world and benefit from cross-fertilisation of ideas.

To help researchers to develop their skills and networks, the Institute hosts a range of scientific seminars with internal and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops. In addition the Campus is home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.
