    Opportunity: Clinical Informatician to the Clinical Trial Bioinformatics Group (#MI/16/36) @ University of Manchester, UK

    BACKGROUND

    The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute (http://www.cruk.manchester.ac.uk), an Institute of The University of Manchester (http://www.manchester.ac.uk), is a world-leading centre for excellence in cancer research. The Institute is core funded by Cancer Research UK (http://www.cancerresearchuk.org), the largest independent cancer research organisation in the world. We are adjacent to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (http://www.christie.nhs.uk), one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe. These factors combine to provide an exceptional environment in which to pursue basic, translational and clinical research programmes.

    Our aim is to understand the fundamental basis of cancer and apply that knowledge to developing new treatment strategies for cancer patients. Our advanced research programmes span a spectrum of cancer research, from the molecular and cellular basis of cancer through to drug discovery, translational research and clinical trials.

    The Institute has outstanding laboratory facilities and exceptional core services, including next generation sequencing, microarrays, confocal microscopy, bioinformatics, histology and mass-spectrometry.

    We are currently looking for a Clinical Informatician for the Clinical Trial Bioinformatics Group within the Centre for cancer biomarkers. The aim of this post is to lead and drive new methods, innovations and approaches in Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) within the Clinical Trial unit of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust by exploiting data collected during an experimental cancer medicine clinical trial with scientific data, information and knowledge. To drive collaboration across boundaries and gain recognition nationally and internationally for the quality and value of Informatics delivered through iDECIDE.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Key responsibilities include:
    • Setting direction and strategy in area of expertise and leading specific research activities
    • Leading research activities to drive innovative informatics solutions within the iDECIDE scope and aligning to tangible outcomes within a clinical environment
    • Earning the trust and respect of teams across The Christie NHS Foundation, The University of Manchester and CRUK Manchester Institute
    • Provide computational, technological and scientific expertise to Clinical programmes, translating the scientific requirements of Clinical teams into computational solutions that have tangible impact
    • Performing analyses, searches or coding that directly benefits Clinical Trials
    • Engaging with patients and healthcare professionals to gather user requirements in context of the business and systems analysis needed in The Christie environment
    • Translating business and systems analysis outcomes into requirements for projects or programmes within the iDECIDE scope
    • Contributing to the development of new iDECIDE capabilities, algorithms, tools and services that support Clinical teams
    • Providing scientific domain knowledge relevant to requirement definition, system design and platform exploitation
    • Contributing to the development of the Information architecture and strategic direction of iDECIDE Platforms
    • Developing national and international networks to support iDECIDE scope
    • Publications in high impact journals

    REQUIREMENTS

    The successful application should have a PhD in biological/medical background including working with clinical data (or equivalent relevant experience). Significant experience of developing collaborative partnership across scientific disciplines is required, along with leading research activities and delivering outcomes. Developing informatics methods in a clinical environment with experience of working with stakeholders including patients, clinicians, research scientists and other relevant functions such as statistics and IT is required. Experience of working directly with patients and clinical systems development with end user design experience (from patient perspective) with analysing clinical data experience and the ability to manage expectations of stakeholders, reporting back progress and getting input as required. The ability to generate top quality publication(s) needs to be demonstrated.

    Duration: fixed term until 31 to December 2020

    COMPENSATION

    Salary in the range of £30,100 - £49,100 dependent upon experience
