Opportunity: Postdocs / Scientist / Senior Scientist in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics @ Qatar Computing Research Institute -- Qatar
Submitted by Michele Ceccarelli; posted on Thursday, June 16, 2016

    BACKGROUND

Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) is seeking candidates for the positions of Postdoc, Scientist and Senior and Principal Scientist to work within the Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E) team. The CS&E group at the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) is engaged in forward-looking research aimed at developing the computing, communications, and storage infrastructures needed to solve large-scale scientific problems in the life sciences. The availability of high-throughput technologies in the life sciences, and in particular for molecular biology, and their large-scale analysis gives the opportunity to pursue significant biomedical discoveries by associating molecular features to biological status and phenotypes such as stage and type of diseases, prognosis, response to of therapies, and others. The data are typically scattered over a plethora of both public and private repositories. Searching and mining for the extraction of new knowledge from the complete set of available data is a novel great challenge for the computational science community.

The analysis of large integrative datasets (such as TCGA and others) has fostered the selection and discovery of novel biomarkers and facilitates the detection of diagnosis and treatment, the identification of novel drug targets, the classification of disease types and the prediction of outcomes for personalized medicine.

A primary goal of the CS&E group is to develop new algorithms, software tools and architectures that are more suitable for such applications. Candidates with experience in the following fields are encouraged to apply:
    • Large scale analysis of genomics data, including gene expression, copy number, mutations, methylation, proteomics, metabolomics and their application within relevant biological fields such cancer and metabolic diseases (diabetes, obesity, etc..)
    • Machine learning and integrative bioinformatics for personalized medicine
    • Algorithms and tools for systems biology
    • Algorithms, tools and architectures for Next Generation Sequencing data processing
Collaborations with experimental biologists are welcome, but focus should be on algorithmic, mathematical and statistical aspects of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Scientists are expected to work in research teams, publish in top-tier conferences and journals, and collaborate with peer researchers and software engineers to develop solutions, necessary prototypes, and intellectual property in the form of disclosures and patent applications.
    • Scientists are expected to contribute towards the research efforts of QCRI and to develop research expertise to tackle the research challenges of interest.
    • In addition to the duties above, Senior Scientists are expected to have sufficient experience and accomplishments that qualify them to lead research projects and contribute to the broad research community beyond QCRI.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Postdoc: must hold a PhD degree from a recognized institution, must have demonstrated potential for excellence in research on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics
    • Scientist: must hold a PhD degree from a recognized institution, must have demonstrated potential for excellence in research, should have at least three year of post-PhD research.
    • Senior Scientist: must hold a PhD degree from a recognized institution, must have a strong track record of research achievements and publications, should have at least seven years of post-PhD research.

    LOCALE

    Research in Qatar:
