BACKGROUND:
This position is a non-tenure track faculty position at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Position Description: The Center for Biotechnology and Genomics (CBG), a multidisciplinary center at Texas Tech University (TTU), seeks a non-tenure-track faculty member with expertise in bioinformatics to join dynamic interdisciplinary programs at TTU. This position was created as part of a cluster hire in biostatistics and bioinformatics funded by the Texas Tech University's President and Provost Offices. We are seeking an outstanding candidate with recognized expertise in Bioinformatics to complement existing expertise in this area and enhance the University research priorities in the cross-cutting arenas of Bioinfomatics/Biostatistics. The candidate is expected to provide appropriate professional and institutional service to the University and the community, perform specialized work in the planning, conducting and supervision of original cross-disciplinary research with other University units, secure significant external funding collaboratively, and mentor graduate students. Responsibilities include individual and team teaching of graduate courses in bioinformatics as part of the MS in Biotechnology degree program's new emphasis in Bioinformatics, and are also expected to be of interest to students from other departments across campus. The new faculty hires will have primary research faculty appointments in the CBG.
Major/Essential Functions: Key responsibilities include providing consultation for bioinformatics data analysis and support, providing expertise and upkeep of two CBG computer clusters, involvement in externally funded collaborative research, and teaching, The faculty position will be working closely with multiple CBG partners on research, training and teaching activities and are expected to provide bioinformatic support to relevant collaborative entities at the university. The tasks for this position include engaging in academic research, publishing high quality peer reviewed research, writing/submitting research proposals and securing significant collaborative external funds, as well as supervising/co-supervising graduate students.
REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Bioinformatics/Biology/Computer Science or related areas. Preference will be given to candidates with strong training in bioinformatics applied to Next-Generation Sequencing and `omics data related to nutrition, biochemistry, health/biomedical sciences, agriculture and/or related disciplines. Candidates are expected to have knowledge in both biology and bioinformatics, and postdoctoral training is preferred.
Examples of expertise include: (i) upkeep and maintenance of R720xd servers with 1.0 PB storage and 1.5TB RAM (ii) ensure cybersecurity of CBG computer clusters, (iii) interpret next generation sequencing data sets from whole-genome sequencing, whole-genome bisulfite sequencing, exome sequencing, RNA-Sequencing, ChIP-Seq, MeRIP-Seq, and metagenomics, (iv) able to work in the Linux environment and utilize programming languages like Python and/or Perl, (v) develop algorithms for `omics data analysis and pathway mapping.
Candidates should have the ability to work collaboratively in program development, teaching, training, and providing bioinformatic expertise. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere are expected. Candidates should demonstrate ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions and other outcomes, ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees and the public, ability to plan workload effectively, providing direct training and supervision as needed. Candidates must exhibit high work ethics consistent with TTU's and funding agency's conduct for responsible research. Candidates are expected to conduct and participate in research relevant to multiple living systems.
PREFERENCES:
Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated research independence, track record of publications and funding, experience with high performance computing, and who are actively involved with application of bioinformatics tools and interested in bioinformatics tool development.
