BACKGROUND:
CSRA is seeking an Applications and Systems Support Specialist with bioinformatics, scientific, or biological sciences experience/education to join our Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Scientific Computing and Bioinformatics Support team. The ideal candidate will have domain knowledge in application and system administration as well as bioinformatics and will be able to leverage those skills to provide support for systems and applications used for ongoing research as well as surveillance activities. In this role, you will work within a team of approximately 15 administrators, high-performance computing and bioinformatics experts to identify new and emerging applications and support needs for the user community based on user input, volume of application support held desk requests, and management input. The candidate will work with other Team members on application support, liaise with external vendors and develop supporting materials to document and create internal reference material. The range of activities that may be covered spans the full application life cycle from installation and setup to use of specific tools and may include custom off the shelf, opens source, and custom applications.
This individual must efficiently manage multiple assignments with a sense of urgency, structure, and attention to detail to ensure business continuity. This individual should possess troubleshooting, problem solving and analytical skills while also having experience with a wide range of bioinformatics applications. In addition, this individual will be responsible for providing documentation, training materials, user guides, and other application specific materials to the contract. Candidate must possess strong communications skills for both written/oral interactions.
Position is for full time employment with CSRA and will be based at the CDC site off Clifton Rd. Typically Monday - Friday day shift schedule and allows an opportunity to work from home 1 day a week once established in the role and with manager approval.
RESPONSIBILITIES:- Contribute by providing guidance with analysis, support for functionality of Third Party Software open source and vendor based
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot scientific applications
- Receives requests from customers for service or problems resolution; prioritizes requests and work towards resolution; track the progress of service and problem resolution; contacts customers to keep them informed of the status of their requests.
- Assists in the development of documentation, user guides, screen-casts, seminars, and other materials to train end-users in the use of software applications
- Interacts one-on-one with users to assist, troubleshoot, and debug scientific applications.
- Ability to debug and write scripts in R, assists in research and analysis of problems and coordinates with SciComp team as-needed
- Provide bioinformatics application support for commercial and open-source tools in use within the division
- Actively participates in the testing and implementation of new applications
- Interacts with team members regarding program changes and problems
- Provides guidance, assistance to users in response to written and verbal questions regarding the proper use and implementation of appropriate procedures and operations necessary to meet user needs
- Creates, updates and maintains user manuals, training, newsletters, and other client-facing and internally-facing materials
- Maintains and/or prepares records, reports and logs and counts of monthly activities associated with applications and related application activities
- Documents problems with applications for appropriate action
- Interact with our Helpdesk system for Tier 1 and Tier 2 application support.
- Assists with the development and coding solutions (e.g. scripts) in support of scientific applications
- Develops written communication and documentation for users and for internal use
- Establishes and maintains cooperative and supportive relationships with customers
Required Experience and Skills:- Bachelors degree and 2+ years experience in IT support or biological sciences application usage, or Masters degree and less experience
- Experience with Linux operating system (ideally CentOS or Red Hat) - comfortable working at command line, navigating file systems, and general application installs
- Knowledge of open source bioinformatics applications, such as Blast, Beast or Bioconductor's
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Desired Experience and Skills:- Degree in in computer science, bioinformatics or related discipline is preferred
- Experience in one or more scripting languages, such as Python, Perl or R is preferred
- Ability to read and debug application scripts written in Perl, python, R, or Bourne-shell
- Experience building user documentation and user manuals is preferred
- Linux Systems Administration skills are a plus
- Experience with the commercial off the shelf scientific computing and bioinformatics applications such as CLC Genomics Suite, Geneious, Matlab, etc
- Knowledge of scientific instrumentation
