Opportunity: Developer/Web Developer -- COMSIG Consortium @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK
Submitted by Sam Bowker; posted on Wednesday, December 14, 2016

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Highly motivated developer/web developer to build a cutting-edge web resource of mutation signatures. We have an exciting opportunity for a developer/web developer to work with Dr Serena Nik-Zainal on a new central public resource to hold, display and mine mutation signatures as well as potentially find new ones. The role will primarily focus on front-end web development, in conjunction with a dedicated back-end developer, together with our team of highly motivated scientists, software developers, and database specialists. The successful candidate will be involved in all stages of the design and implementation of this modern distributed web resource. The goals of the project are two-fold: 1, Provide a web application to support the querying and mining of the catalogue of mutation signatures and 2, Design and implement a back-end compute infrastructure to allow external users to analyse their own data using our in-house signature detection software. The role is supported by the COMSIG consortium, funded by a Wellcome Trust Strategic Award, which is focused on exploring the mutational signatures of DNA damage and repair processes. The over-arching objective of the project is to explore mutational signatures in the context of the biological mechanisms associated with DNA repair, by integrating cellular/molecular approaches with genome-wide assays including genomic sequencing, RNA-seq and ChIP-seq. The position would suit a highly motivated developer/web developer who has an interest in building cutting edge web resources to store, display and mine highly complex biological data sets. We are looking for an individual who enjoys working in a highly motivated multi-disciplinary team environment and can help solve the complex IT problems that will ultimately aid our understanding of mutation processes.

    ABOUT US

The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease. We use state of the art large-scale genomic approaches to drive world-leading projects to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. Our goal is to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens. The Institute is located near Cambridge, UK on the stunning Wellcome Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), Open Targets, a Biodata Innovation Centre and will soon host Genomics England Limited's 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre. The Campus is also home to Wellcome Genome Campus Connecting Science. Connecting Science inspires new thinking, sparks conversation and supports learning by drawing on the ground-breaking research taking place on the Campus. Its mission is to enable everyone to explore genomic science and its impact on research, health and society. To help researchers to develop their skills and networks, the Institute hosts a range of scientific seminars with internal and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops.
