    Opportunity: Computational Biologist @ Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation -- Ardmore, OK (US)

    BACKGROUND

    The Plant Biology Division of the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. in Ardmore Oklahoma is seeking applicants for the position of Computational Biologist. The successful applicant will conduct research in computational biology and bioinformatics theory and methods with a focus on the research and development of innovative methods, tools and bioinformatics systems. This research will investigate and decipher the plant genotype-phenotype (G2P) associations through integrative genome-scale biological network and genome-wide association analysis. Research related to this position will be conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Xuechun Zhao.

    This temporary Computational Biologist position is funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation. Funding is anticipated to be renewed annually based upon performance and funding availability and is scheduled to end on or before May 31, 2019.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The successful candidate will develop novel algorithms/models and new tools to:
    • Mine large-scale plant functional "omics", genotypic , and phenotypic data to study how genome-scale gene regulatory networks regulate biological processes, pathways, and complex traits
    • Enable precise, genome wide molecular marker-trait association analysis in plants by incorporating novel statistical genetics approaches
    • Develop a knowledge discovery platform for the integration, mining , deciphering and discovery of plant gene networks, genotype and phenotype associations
    Other duties will include but are not limited to reporting date and results to PI and assisting in preparation and publishing of data in scientific journals.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Qualifications:
    M.S. degree in quantitative sciences, engineering, bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, information systems, genomics, genetics, plant biology, molecular biology or other related field along with two years of research experience in scientific computing and algorithm implementation are required. The successful candidate will also have an understanding of basic biological principles and the ability to develop biological insight applications via independent problem solving skills. Having good communication skills, strong team-work spirit, and self-learning abilities are highly desirable.

    PREFERENCES

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Electronic Engineering, Genomics, Biochemistry, Plant Biology or other highly-related field
    • Knowledge of network biology and/or statistics genetics
    • Experience in Bioinformatics and/or Genomics
    • Excellence in mathematics and computer algorithm development, e.g. familiar with advanced statistics, machine learning, optimization and big data analytics
    • Programming skills in at least one main computer languages such as C/C++, Python, Java, Matlab, R; SQL; and efficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems
    • Experience in developing large-scale data analysis systems and scientific databases
