Opportunity: Professor -- Biology @ University of Newcastle -- Newcastle, NSW, Australia
Submitted by Rosalind de Sailly; posted on Monday, June 05, 2017

    BACKGROUND

The University of Newcastle (http://www.newcastle.edu.au), Australia (UON) is committed to equity and excellence and to creating a better future for its regions through a focus on innovation and impact. This newly created appointment will make strategic contributions to the University's STEMM strategy and Global Impact Clusters (http://www.newcastle.edu.au/research-and-innovation/innovation/clusters), helping build the global reputation and profile of the University.

    About Biology at UON:
The discipline of biology has performed exceptionally well in the Australian Research Council's ERA assessments, with several research themes scoring a 5 (well above world standard). Biochemistry and cell biology has been awarded a 5 at every evaluation.

The disciplines of environmental and life sciences at UON are distinctive for their focus on the application of science for impact. The ideal candidate would sustain continued excellence and be compatible with existing research groups including reproductive biology, plant biology and molecular microbiology. Excellent opportunities exist for internal collaboration with groups such as Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (https://www.newcastle.edu.au/nier) and the Global Centre for Environmental Remediation (http://www.newcastle.edu.au/gcer). This appointment can join either the UON Priority Research Centre for Chemical Biology and Clinical Pharmacy (https://www.newcastle.edu.au/research-and-innovation/centre/ccb/about-us) or the UON Priority Research Centre for Reproductive Science (https://www.newcastle.edu.au/research-and-innovation/centre/crs). A leading biologist could generate work with other disciplines such as chemistry or biomedical sciences or lead new priority areas such as bioinformatics where developments are underway in big data and genetics. The discipline of biology teaches a large undergraduate biology major, and the Bachelor of Biotechnology, a hands-on program with substantial industry involvement.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Selection criteria:
The right person for this role brings a PhD in biology or equivalent related field, and a significant and sustained record of high quality research productivity to build on UON's reputation for world-class innovation in biology and to maintain an established international profile in the field. A significant record of external grant funding at national or international level and an established international and national academic profile are both key criteria. An interdisciplinary way of working will be key to this role's fit at UON. Other research strengths are detailed here: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/research-and-innovation/global-leadership/research-strengths.

    ABOUT US

UON is where Beryl Nashar became the first woman dean of science at an Australian university. Building on that proud heritage for a new generation, the UON is committed to positive change, and leading in research translation and world-class innovation. Through the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Pilot (https://youtu.be/Jk7q8C35gHE) of Athena SWAN, the University is strengthening its commitment to helping women achieve the promise of their academic careers and are taking important steps to ensure the full participation of women by evaluating and addressing gender inequality. More about these initiatives is available here: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/newsroom/from-the-executive/gender-progress-through-athena-swan-pilot.

UON is a dynamic research-intensive university ranked in the top eight nationally for the quality of research. UON has recognised international strengths including biomedical science, clinical and translational health, and biology as well as in chemistry, engineering, mathematics, life sciences, environmental sciences, architecture and many more. UON's work with partners drives new directions in research, education and regional engagement.
