Opportunity: UON Women in Science Chair @ University of Newcastle -- Newcastle, NSW, Australia
Submitted by Rosalind de Sailly; posted on Monday, June 05, 2017

    BACKGROUND

The University of Newcastle (http://www.newcastle.edu.au), Australia (UON) is committed to equity and excellence and to creating a better future for its regions through a focus on innovation and impact. This newly created appointment will make strategic contributions to the University's STEMM strategy and Global Impact Clusters (http://www.newcastle.edu.au/research-and-innovation/innovation/clusters), helping build the global reputation and profile of the University.

UON is where Beryl Nashar became the first woman dean of science at an Australian university. Building on that proud heritage for a new generation, the UON Women in Science Chair will be at the forefront of positive change, and lead in research translation and world-class innovation. Joining a cohort of other academic leaders and a working group across the University, this appointment will take a leading role in building and promoting gender equity within STEMM, and supporting UON's participation in the Athena SWAN initiative. The appointment will be important to cultural change and building future capability in the current generation of researchers, the upcoming generation and the one to follow.

Through the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Pilot (https://youtu.be/Jk7q8C35gHE) of Athena SWAN, the University is strengthening its commitment to helping women achieve the promise of their academic careers and are taking important steps to ensure the full participation of women by evaluating and addressing gender inequality. More about these initiatives is available here: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/newsroom/from-the-executive/gender-progress-through-athena-swan-pilot.

    About STEMM at UON:
UON is renowned for the quality and breadth of its research, and a commitment to research translation and world class innovation. The University is placed in the top 8 Australian universities for research quality which is "well above world standard" (ERA 2015) and it is also ranked in the top 10 for research funding by the ARC and NHMRC.

UON is a dynamic research-intensive university. UON has recognised international strengths including biomedical science, clinical and translational health, and biology as well as in chemistry, engineering, mathematics, life sciences, environmental sciences, architecture and many more. UON's work with partners drives new directions in research, education and regional engagement. More on UON's research strengths here: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/research-and-innovation.
