Opportunity: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, Penn State Cancer Institute and the Four Diamonds Pediatric Oncology Research Center @ Penn State College of Medicine -- Hershey, PA (US)
Submitted by Mary J. Leone; posted on Monday, June 26, 2017

    BACKGROUND

The Department of Public Health Sciences, the Penn State Cancer Institute (PSCI), and the Four Diamonds Pediatric Oncology Research Center in the Penn State College of Medicine are seeking applicants for a faculty position (tenured/tenure-eligible) with expertise in bioinformatics. This position will have a primary faculty appointment in the Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS), joint faculty appointments in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics, and membership in the PSCI.

PHS consists of three academic divisions, namely, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, and Health Services and Behavioral Research. PHS provides a strong infrastructure for its faculty members in the areas of biostatistics, study design, data management, research computing, project management, and finance and administration. PHS offers four graduate programs, namely, Master of Science (MS) in Public Health Sciences, Master of Public Health (MPH), PhD in Biostatistics, and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), and currently PHS is developing a PhD in Epidemiology program. The PSCI consists of Penn State University; Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA; Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, PA; and affiliated hospitals and partner organizations. The PSCI catchment area is diverse and includes 28 counties, many of which are rural and Appalachian.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The faculty position is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, and the individual hired will be expected to build and develop bioinformatics research within the PSCI and the Four Diamonds Pediatric Oncology Research Center. There will be ample opportunities to work with wet-lab researchers on a variety of basic and translational cancer research projects including those involving pediatric malignancies. The position will involve integrative analyses of high throughput data from various sources (e.g. epigenomics, genomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, and transcriptomics) as well as data mining and visualization of large-scale integrative data sets (e.g. TCGA, ENCODE, and others). The successful candidate will benefit from interactions with outstanding students and bioinformaticians at both Hershey and University Park campuses of the Pennsylvania State University.

    REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have a PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, or a related field, and a strong track record of relevant publications. The successful candidate should have experience in working with high throughput data sets (e.g. RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, proteomics, microarrays). Experience in data mining and visualization of large-scale cancer genomic data sets (e.g. TCGA) is highly desirable.

    COMPENSATION

The academic rank and salary will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and credentials.

    HOW TO APPLY

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Candidates should submit a letter of application including statement of current and future research interests, curriculum vitae, and names and contact information for three references. Applicants must submit their documents through the Electronic Jobs Managements System (http://psu.jobs/Search/Opportunities.html, Job #72275).
