BACKGROUND:
This position will join an enthusiastic and growing team of life scientists and software developers in the Life Sciences Computing area at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). The Life Sciences Computing group supports a community of thousands of biologists and biomedical researchers worldwide who are working to understand the principles and mechanisms of life, feed a growing world population, and prevent or treat diseases and disabilities. The position will help envision, design, create, and support innovative technical approaches to applying big data applications and machine learning algorithms to research questions in areas ranging from epidemiology to drug design to neuroscience (and more). RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include: Collaborate with domain experts on data modeling efforts in support of TACC research systems; Assist with investigating and evaluating emerging machine learning and big data applications and approaches; Identify and implement data analysis and machine learning workflows on TACC HPC, cloud, and web service platforms; Maintain machine learning and data analysis software applications on TACC systems; Compile and maintain pertinent technical documentation; Train and support users with a varying technical proficiencies.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, or other applied science. Experience programming in a modern language such as Python, Javascript, Java, or Go. Experience working in a Linux/UNIX command line environment including basic shell scripting and system configuration; Familiarity with source control systems, preferably Git. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Ability to communicate clearly and empathetically to deliver technical training and professional presentations. Demonstrated ability to work independently under established deadlines and as a member of a team. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
PREFERENCES:
Commitment to professional development evidenced by completion of academic or technical classes. More than one year experience developing software in Python, server-side Javascript, or Go. Strong interest in enabling open, reproducible research. Excitement about projects with transformative potential for vulnerable populations. In addition, experience with some of the following is desired: Software or Data Carpentry concepts; Information visualization tools like Bokeh, Tableau, or Plot.ly; Jupyter or Apache Zeppelin notebooks; Functional programming; Data frameworks such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, or Kafka; Machine learning frameworks like SparkML, scikit-learn, or Apache Mahout; Deep Learning libraries like TensorFlow, Caffe, or Torch
TERMS:
Hours: 40.00 Standard from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. Position and funding expected to continue.
