Opportunity: Head of Bioinformatics @ Genomics England -- London, UK
Submitted by Eugene Mc Daid; posted on Monday, May 14, 2018

Paramount are working in partnership with Genomics England to expand their team in order to deliver success to the 100,000 Genomes Project. This is a challenging and fast moving project with the aim to carry out whole genome sequencing on 100,000 participants.
Genomics England works with key partners to collect, transport, store, quality check and sequence the samples from participants. The aim for this project is to create a new genomic medicine service for the NHS – transforming the way people are cared for. Patients may be offered a diagnosis where there wasn't one before. In time, there is the potential of new and more effective treatments.

Genomics England are now seeking a highly talented expert in the field of Computational Genomics to head up their brand new department, Research Services. The Head of Bioinformatics will work to support external researchers and industrial partners, facilitating access to datasets, providing custom analysis and ensuring optimal use of their Research Data Centre. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional academic background, with strong leadership ability and excellent communication skills.

    Main responsibilities will involve:
    • Leading a team of 5 Bioinformaticians
    • Working closely with external clients to ensure the quality of data analysis is being delivered, and the right methodologies used
    • Internal collaboration across Genomics England's core departments – Commercial, Bioinformatics, Software/Infrastructure and Chief Scientists
    • Gaining a deep understanding of a variety of customer needs, from the NHS, academia, and industry

    The ideal candidate will have:
    • A deep understanding and demonstrable knowledge of statistical genetics/quantitative genomics, with a PhD in a related discipline
    • Experience working with large genomic and clinical datasets
    • Exposure to GWAS, cohort studies or population genetics
    • Proven leadership experience, and confident communicating at all levels, with customers and stakeholders
    • Technical ability, proficient coding skills in R, Python and experience with statistical methodologies

This is an opportunity to join one of the world's leading genomics projects at it's most exciting phase. For more information on how to apply, send your CV to efrancis[at], or call Emilie on 0121 616 3477.
