Opportunity: Scientist II, Bioinformatics @ Astellas Universal Cells -- Seattle, WA (US)
Submitted by Emily Bibler; posted on Friday, August 16, 2019

    BACKGROUND

Universal Cells is focused on the development and commercialization of stem cell and regenerative medicine therapies. We conduct clinical-grade gene editing of stem cells and have a major effort in R&D. We design and produce stem cells that avoid rejection, and we engineer cells with improved therapeutic properties, all through our world-class gene editing platform.

Our goal is to provide cells for regenerative medicine applications that can treat all patients. Through internal R&D and our corporate partnerships, we are pursuing a diverse range of disease indications, including blindness, cancer, vascular insufficiency, and autoimmune diseases.

Universal Cells is announcing a Scientist II, Bioinformatics opportunity at their facility in Seattle, WA.

    Purpose:
We are seeking a self-motivated computational biologist to be a key contributor to Universal Cells' next-generation sequencing research programs. This individual will closely collaborate with both our clinical gene editing and preclinical research teams to support computational analyses of pluripotent stem cells and differentiated cell products. The ideal candidate will possess a strong and diverse background in computational biology; relevant experience in NGS characterization of immune cell function is a plus. This position requires a high degree of experimental rigor as the experimental analyses will be directly used to inform both scientific and business decisions.

Universal Cells is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Astellas Pharma. Astellas is an R&D-driven global pharmaceutical company whose philosophy is to contribute to the improvement of people's health around the world through the provision of innovative and reliable pharmaceutical products.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Essential Job Responsibilities:
    • Develop in-house NGS analysis pipelines for diverse applications.
    • Closely collaborate with the clinical gene editing team to analyze and interpret WGS and WES datasets generated from gene edited pluripotent stem cells.
    • Closely collaborate with the pre-clinical research teams to analyze and interpret RNA-Seq datasets. Will also lead efforts to extract relevant and meaningful biological insights from the data.
    • Use genome-wide data to identify functional differences between closely related samples.
    • Mine WGS data for signatures of viral and adventitious agents.
    • Summarize and present data in group meetings, author internal reports, and contribute to cross-functional discussions.
    • Ability to travel and represent Universal Cells at public and private meetings.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A Ph.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, genome sciences, or a related discipline with 3+ years of relevant post-graduate experience, or a MS with 7+ years, or a BS with 10+ years of highly relevant experience
    • Strong publication record supporting expertise in NGS analysis and pipeline development
    • Experience with common NGS analysis software
    • Ability to utilize computational tools in common scripting languages
    • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
    • Ability to work independently
    • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously work on multiple projects and collaborate with multiple teams to achieve scientific goals
