BACKGROUND
John A. Burns School of Medicine. Regular, Bioinformatics PhD Graduate fellowship positions with the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Office of Bioinformatics Core, Department of Quantitative Health Sciences, located at the University of Hawai`i (UH) at Manoa, Kaka'ako Campus on Honolulu, Hawai`i. JABSOM ranks No. 56 in best medical schools: research in 2019, and ranked No. 41 in 2018. The Bioinformatics core also supports the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center which is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific.RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the supervisor, the candidates will apply or develop bioinformatics methods to conduct integrative analyses of high-throughput, microarray, next- and third-generation sequencing "omics" data, including data from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, and metagenomics experiments. Interacts closely with physician scientists and bioscience researchers to facilitate precision medicine development by interpreting vast amounts of "omics" and clinical data. Assists in the preparation of grant applications. Write peer-reviewed abstracts and publications. Contributes to data management and research methods development. Conduct other duties as assigned.REQUIREMENTS
1. Bachelor or Master degree from an accredited college or university in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering or a related field
2. Excellent MS Excel, Word, Powerpoint, and Qualtrics skills
3. Experience using Statistics and bioinformatics software and pipelines
4. Course learning of biostatistics and bioinformatics
5. Some experience for biology data processing
6. Demonstrated experience in one programming language
7. Excellent oral and written communication
8. Strong interpersonal skills
9. Responsible, organized, dependable, and efficient
10. Foreign students need to pass English proficiency testPREFERENCES
1. Experience working in bioinformatics projects
2. Experience with database development
3. Experience in UNIX-like operating systems
