Opportunity: Senior Bioinformatics Scientist @ General Dynamics Information Technology / CDC -- Atlanta, GA (US)
Submitted by Dr. David Pot; posted on Thursday, December 19, 2019
BACKGROUND
GDIT is seeking a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist to join its team in Atlanta working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Advance Molecular Detection (OAMD) to modernize CDC's capability in infectious disease diagnostics, treatment, and pathogen surveillance. The ideal candidate will be a skilled professional with broad experience in bioinformatics, including comparative genomics, Next Generation Sequence (NGS) analysis, high throughput genome annotation and analysis pipeline development. The ability to work with and integrate other data types (e.g. antigenicity, functional assays) with core sequence information is highly desired. In this role, you will collaborate with CDC staff and team members to define project objectives, implementation details, and project schedules. Working as part of diverse team of bioinformaticians and IT professionals, you will contribute to the development of standards-based algorithms and analysis workflows; the application of those tools to emerging needs of the CDC; and integration of those capabilities into broader bioinformatics activities and software development efforts. Experience with viral and bacterial pathogen genomics is preferred. This is an industrial bioinformatics group and although there will be elements of research to this position, the incumbent is expected to maintain a focus on product delivery.

- Understanding of the theory of major NGS platforms
- Familiarity with statistical/mathematical packages, such as R or MATLAB
- Fluency in Linux and high performance computing environments
- Familiarity with principles of object oriented programming
PREFERENCES
Desired skills and experience:
- Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology; Biostatistics, or other relevant discipline
- 5+ years experience in bioinformatics and NGS data analysis, including the development of multistep analysis pipelines/workflows using scripting languages
- Experience developing production-quality bioinformatics tools, workflows, and applications
- Experience with workflow orchestration tools/standards such as Common Workflow Language (CWL) or Workflow Description Language (WDL)
- Experience developing portable bioinformatics tools using contemporary container technologies such as Docker or Singularity
- Experience in using software revision control systems (e.g. GIT)
- Familiarity with service-oriented architectures (SOA), experience developing within such architectures
- Experience with full software development life cycle and software development best practices
