Opportunity: Postdoctoral Employee (#90969) @ Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory -- Berkeley, CA (US)
Submitted by Bill Cannan; posted on Wednesday, September 09, 2020

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL, http://www.lbl.gov) Joint Genome Institute (JGI, https://jgi.doe.gov) Division has an opening for a Computational Biologist Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

In this exciting role, you will join the newly formed New Lineages of Life Team which is part of the Microbial Program at the JGI. You will lead research efforts to innovatively mine multi-omics data for novel host-associated microbial lineages, reveal global distribution patterns and perform co-occurrence analyses, provide an in-depth characterization of the unique coding potential and discover genes that enable the synthesis of bioproducts that may impact microbiome structure and function.

    What You Will Do:
    • Comparative genomic analyses of large-scale biological sequence data sets.
    • Phylogenomics of novel microbial lineages.
    • Analysis of genomes of host-associated microbes, including evolutionary analyses (genome reduction, horizontal gene transfer).
    • Publish in peer review journals; contribute to scientific research papers and reports.
    Additional Responsibilities as needed:
    • Use comparative genomics and machine learning approaches to predict the lifestyle of novel uncultivated microbes.
    • Work in a high-performance computing environment.
    • Attend and present at key scientific meetings and workshops.

    REQUIREMENTS

    What Is Required:
    • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Biology, Life Sciences, or related field with a strong research interest in Microbiology and Microbial Ecology.
    • Proficiency in Python and/or R in a Unix environment.
    • Experience in comparative genomic analyses of large-scale biological sequence data sets, metagenomics, and microbial genomics, phylogenomics, and best practices with (meta)genomic standards.
    • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills, experience with Jupyter notebooks.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills to present findings at group meetings and conferences, and to publish results.
    • Ability to work independently as well as part of a diverse team.
    Additional Desired Qualifications:
    • Previous analysis of genomes of host-associated microbes, including evolutionary analyses (genome reduction, horizontal gene transfer).
    • Experience with database structure and management.
    • Experience applying machine learning, pattern recognition, or modeling to scientific problems.

    TERMS

    • This is a full time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
    • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
    • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
    • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

    LOCALE

    • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.

    COMPENSATION

    • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
