Opportunity: 2 Postdoc positions within Yeast Synthetic Biology and Computational Biology @ DTU Biosustain -- Lyngby, Greater Copenhagen, Denmark
Submitted by Signatur AS; posted on Friday, December 04, 2020

    BACKGROUND

Do you have a heart for biosustainability, synthetic biology, and large-scale data integration, to address societal and environmental needs? Then, the Synthetic Biology Tools for Yeast section at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), could be your next career destination.

    Focus and Scope:
In our research group we develop state-of-the-art synthetic biology tools for yeasts in order to advance sustainable solutions within industrial biotechnology, environmental engineering, and therapy. In the research track specific to this job post, this includes data-mining, design and engineering of yeasts armed with novel sensory systems for detecting extracellular and endogenous cues, and to couple such inputs with diagnostic and therapeutic outputs, especially in relation to key applications including directed evolution of enzymes, screening of yeast cell factory designs, and control of metabolism.

Our vision is to transform omics and data of sensorized yeast cells into general knowledge about sensor design and use this knowledge to support biobased production of natural product human bioactives as well as for applications within environmental engineering and therapeutics. To strengthen our team's R&D activities, and further advance our visions we seek two postdoctoral researchers, ideally with complementary expertise within computational biology and yeast synthetic biology.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidates will be responsible for developing and executing state-of-the-art technologies that help solve difficult problems in the fields of biotechnology and life sciences in a large sense. The key responsibilities of the successful candidates will include:

    Position 1:
    • Design, engineer and characterize novel sensory systems for yeasts and other model eukaryotes
    • Apply sensory systems for cell factory screening, cell-cell control circuits, and behavioral/therapeutic applications
    Position 2:
    • Mine and analyze large-scale data sets (e.g. genomics and transcriptomics data, human bioactives databases, chemical ecology)
    • Design of experiments and communicate/visualize multivariate data
    • Support wet-lab work and automation (Position 1)
    Both:
    • Publish impactful scientific papers
    • Support innovation and ideation for grant proposals
    • Support mentoring of early stage researchers

    REQUIREMENTS

    Required Qualifications:
    • A PhD degree within i) bioengineering/biotechnology, or ii) computer science/engineering sciences or any comparable disciplines
    • A scientific record with international publications
    • Ability to efficiently integrate research findings into publications and intellectual property;
    • Creativity, and openness to innovation
    • Enthusiasm, responsibility, and excellent collaboration skills;
    • Passion for high-quality data generation
    • Strong oral and written skills in English
    • Experience working in biological systems
    Specific Qualifications:
The two ideal candidates will be experts in one or more of the following mutually complementary research areas, without being an exhaustive list:
    • Proven track-record within synthetic biology, ideally within yeast
    • Proven large-scale data integration ability
    • Strong programming skills (e.g. Python, R)
    • Significant understanding of omics technologies and data analysis expertise

    COMPENSATION

    What We Offer in Return:
DTU Biosustain is focused on developing the next generation of cell factories focusing on big data generation and analytics for developing microbial genome-scale science and applying it to biobased production and microbial foods to accelerate green transition and support sustainable lifestyles. We offer an exciting, collaborative, and diligent work environment, focusing on scientific excellence and innovation with both societal and environmental impacts. The positions offer unique possibilities of being part of a team working on foundational knowledge and translational projects involving collaborations with other sections of DTU Biosustain, e.g. the bigger application area "Natural Products" headed by Scientific Director Prof. Jay. D. Keasling and the CfB BioFoundry, as well as international collaborators.

DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. In the Synthetic Biology Tools for Yeast section we offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in a work-environment characterized by collegial respect, a welcoming atmosphere, and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

    Salary and Terms of Employment:
The appointments will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The job contracts offered to the qualifying candidates will be for 2 years. Expected starting date: Flexible, but preferably early 2021.
