Opportunity: Laboratory Manager @ Arizona State University -- Tempe, AZ (US)
Submitted by Elaina Thomas; posted on Thursday, March 25, 2021

    BACKGROUND

The constant advance of high-throughput biotechnologies (e.g. NextGen Sequencing) has fostered a new generation of biomedical research that aims to uncover the inner workings of the cell on a genome-wide scale. This revolution is transforming research activities across Arizona State University (ASU). To strengthen these research efforts and to create new research opportunities that are more competitive in the post-genomic era, the Knowledge Enterprise and the Biodesign Institute made a joint effort to establish a Bioinformatics Core facility in 2015. Bioinformatics Core Facility has three major functional components: (1) routine data-analysis services, (2) research-oriented collaborations, and (3) targeted training. It has coordinated operations with other core facilities, such as Genomics Core on campus to improve user experience and productivity.

The Laboratory Manager, Bioinformatics Core Facility is responsible for leading, managing and mentoring a team for all types of bioinformatics support and consultation on Omics data to local Arizona academic and commercial institutions as well as national and international institutions. This person will also participate in omics-based research projects related to diagnostics at the Center for Personalized Diagnostics (CPD) at Biodesign Institute (https://biodesign.asu.edu/personalized-diagnostics) and the recently established ASU Biodesign Clinical Testing Lab (ABCTL, https://biodesign.asu.edu/research/clinical-testing).

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Manage and coordinate Bioinformatics Core daily operation
    • Lead bioinformatics analysis services and customer consulting/communication as a chief bioinformatics scientist
    • Lead bioinformatics analysis for CPD and ABCTL on omics-based research projects
    • Develop and maintain bioinformatics analysis pipelines and novel customized bioinformatics tools
    • Set up Bioinformatics Core daily operation workflow, including FTP data return system, HPC management, sample submission form, charging rate, service category and ets.
    • Organize and present Bioinformatics Core events (workshops, seminars, and posters) at ASU and international conferences
    • Train and mentor Bioinformatics Core staff
    • Provide support letter and figures and methods section for manuscripts and grants to support internal and external research groups
    • Participate in projects via research-oriented collaborations. Apply state-of-the-art computational approaches and develop novel methods to accelerate biomedical discoveries

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Proficiency in scientific computing and programming/scripting languages (e.g. Python or R) in UNIX platforms
    • Experience in analysis of biomedical data sets by using public software packages (e.g. R/Bioconductor and Biopython)
    • Sound knowledge on next-generation sequencing analysis methods, genomic/proteomic data resources (e.g. NCBI, Ensembl, COSMIC, and UniProt), pre-clinical research (e.g. functional genomics and biomarker discovery)
    • Backboard on population genetics, statistics and machine learning
    • Experience in writing scientific documents (e.g. manuscripts and grant proposals)
    • Project management accreditation and related experience
    • Experience in running scientific projects and large-scale collaborations
