    After ending their entire line of Linux-on-Intel servers and workstations and spending 2002 without any announcements of new hardware running Linux, it seemed that SGI had abandoned the Free Software kernel. If you looked at their hardware line-up last year, you would have seen O2's, Octanes, Onyxes and Origins, all running IRIX-on-MIPS, pretty much what you would have found five years ago.

    But, just this month SGI announced the high-end Altix 3000, based on the Linux kernel and the Intel Itanium 2 chip. The enclosure is even colored like Tux the penguin. Let's hope Linux is back to stay at SGI.
