Opportunity: Genomics Data Scientist (#93419) @ Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory -- Berkeley, CA (US)
Submitted by Bill Cannan; posted on Friday, August 13, 2021

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBL, http://lbl.gov) Joint Genome Institute (JGI, https://jgi.doe.gov) Division has an opening for a Genomics Data Scientist.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

This is an exciting opportunity for applying your data science expertise in genomics to solve the most challenging energy and environmental problems. As part of the Genome Analysis group, you will develop computational tools to perform next-generation sequence data analysis for research and development projects surrounding genome, transcriptome, and metagenome. Your duties will include formulating complex data science problems, designing and implementing data science approaches, and analyzing high-throughput genomics datasets. You will be involved in the development and implementation of new analysis pipelines or improving existing ones. You will play a significant role in defining the biological significance of the data, will work with various JGI groups on data analysis projects, and facilitate the transfer of knowledge of technologies and applications to JGI staff. You may also provide custom analysis support to external collaborators.

    What You Will Do:
    • Develop new genomic analytic tools or improve existing ones to support R&D projects.
    • Troubleshoot complex system and data analysis problems and provide analysis support for adopting new genome technologies.
    • Provide high quality software documentation to enable reproducible analysis.
    Additional Responsibilities as Needed:
    • May coordinate activities of junior staff members and graduate students in data science.
    • Publish or assist in publishing significant research outcomes in scientific journals.
    • Foster a collaborative environment by participating in discussion groups across different disciplines within Berkeley Lab.

    REQUIREMENTS

    What is Required:
    • A minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related disciplines; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or equivalent experience.
    • Experience using professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
    • Demonstrated experience processing large volumes of genomic data.
    What is Desired:
    • Expertise with next-generation sequence analysis such as short read alignment and genome assembly.
    • Proficiency with scripting languages including Python, R, or Bash.
    • Knowledge about SQL, MySQL, Oracle, or other RDBMs.
    • Proficient with one of the following high-performance computing environments: grid computing or cloud computing.
    • Demonstrated analytical skills sufficient to troubleshoot system and data analysis problems and make recommendations.
    • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
    • Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a diverse team environment.
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks in parallel while working on a large number of projects.

    TERMS

    • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
    • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
    • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
    • Berkeley Lab is committed to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accountability (IDEA) and strives to continue building community with these shared values and commitments.

    LOCATION

    • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. We are also open to fully remote workers.

    HOW TO APPLY

Apply directly online at http://50.73.55.13/counter.php?id=205157 and follow the on-line instructions to complete the application process.

    ABOUT US

JGI & Berkeley Lab: A View to Fuel Innovative Science in the Public Interest
They say it's all about location and Berkeley Lab has it all: a view above the San Francisco Bay, cool breezes, and world-class multidisciplinary science within a diverse and respectful research ecosystem of 5,000 people. Nearly 90 years ago, Ernest Orlando Lawrence, the inventor of the cyclotron, brought physicists, biologists, engineers and mathematicians together in Berkeley above the University of California campus to tackle the most urgent scientific challenges. Today, after garnering 13 Nobel Prizes, Berkeley Lab has sustained and grown that tradition of open, interdisciplinary team science, exemplified by how the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (JGI) addresses the most pressing energy and environmental challenges using integrative genome science approaches. JGI takes up residence in the new, state-of-the-art Integrative Genomics Building (IGB) along with the U.S. Department of Energy Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase) to expand the frontiers of energy and environmental science in partnership with the worldwide community of researchers. Will you join us and be a critical part of our next ground-breaking discoveries?

Working at Berkeley Lab has many rewards including a competitive compensation program, excellent health and welfare programs, a retirement program that is second to none, and outstanding development opportunities. POLICY

Berkeley Lab is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer. We heartily welcome applications from women, minorities, veterans, and all who would contribute to the Lab's mission of leading scientific discovery, inclusion, and professionalism. In support of our diverse global community, all qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, or protected veteran status.
