    BACKGROUND

    The Center for Personalized Diagnostics at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University is seeking a highly motivated individual who will be responsible for the design, development, testing, maintenance, and technical support of innovative bioinformatics software for use in scientific research. The Scientific Software Engineer for Research will design and develop high quality innovative applications, tools and utilities required for Bioinformatics analysis to accelerate scientific research and gain insights into genes and proteins involved in human diseases and investigate their biological functions.

    Additionally, the successful candidate will develop and support advanced software for the ASU Biodesign Clinical Testing Lab to provide advanced, high throughput COVID-19 Testing throughout Arizona and the southwest region. As a member of the Informatics Team, the successful candidate will work closely with research scientists, statisticians, and lab staff to create, deliver, and support high quality innovative research software applications and databases using bioinformatics, data management, software programming and web development skills

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Selected candidate will become a member of the Center for Personalized Diagnostics informatics team in the Biodesign Institute focusing on:
    • Designing, implementing, testing, and delivering innovative scientific software for advanced research applications,
    • Developing high quality web-based software and database applications,
    • Creating, testing, and supporting high throughput bioinformatics tools and utility software,
    • Interacting, training, and working with research scientists and Lab users on how to use software and solve problems,
    • Analyzing and writing software functionality requirements, designs specifications, manuals, and user guides, and
    • Distributing developed software to the worldwide scientific community
    These tools are being developed and used for functional proteomics research applications including clinical lab testing, high-throughput cloning, automated clone evaluation, machine/deep learning, biomarker discovery, microarray processing and biomedical advanced research and development projects.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Master's degree in Computer Science or related field and three years of relevant experience (i.e. developing software in a commercial or research environment); OR, Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or related field and five years of relevant experience (i.e. developing software in a commercial or research environment); OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

    IMPORTANT NOTE: What is the meaning of "equivalent combination" in the minimum qualifications? It means one year of higher education or 24 credit hours, is equal to one year of experience. For example, a four year Bachelor's degree is equal to four years of experience.

    Desired Qualifications:
    • Evidence of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or related field of study and five years' work experience developing high quality software in a research environment; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
    • Evidence of a software development and database background with technologies such as MySQL, Java, Python, PHP, AngularJS, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, XML, Apache, Tomcat and Linux desired.
    • Evidence of a Master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or related field of study and two or more years of full-time software development experience are sought.
    • Experience in data management, graphical user interface, visualization, analytics and database skills.
    • Experience with software design, development and technical support of bioinformatics applications.
    • Experience with systems integration; machine and deep learning.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems), process technology and robotics to support high throughput functional biology and proteomics a plus.
    • Evidence of effective communications, teamwork and interpersonal skills essential.
    Working Environment:
    • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking.
    • Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 20 pounds.
    • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
    • Regular review of completed tasks.
