    Opportunity: Head of Theme for Data Science @ UK Research and Innovation -- London or Swindon, UK

    BACKGROUND

    The Medical Research Council is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The mission of MRC is to improve human health through world-class research. We develop and operate some of the most remarkable scientific facilities in the world and work collaboratively with industry, academia and government in exciting partnerships.

    This is an exciting opportunity to drive data science transformation of MRC research and innovation, in the context of UKRI and the broader landscapes, through providing leadership and direction for MRC/UKRI across digital research infrastructure, data science talent, and data science research. The role is very cross-cutting to the work of MRC and UKRI.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Key responsibilities include:
    • Identifying and implementing strategic priorities for digital research infrastructure, data science talent, and data science research.
    • Effectively engaging, influencing, and collaborating with a very broad network of stakeholders, to ensure MRC/UKRI data science priorities are realized and promoted.
    • Ensuring there are clear, realistic, timely and well communicated plans for developing and evolving key aspects of MRC's data science theme, and to lead implementation.
    • Leading a team of high-performing professionals and manage and prioritise operational resources across a matrix structure.
    • Making sure data science approaches are embedded in current and emerging MRC & UKRI initiatives and activities.
    • Advising the MRC Executive Chair, Directors, Council on key issues to inform corporate decision making and organisational direction.

    REQUIREMENTS

    You will need:
    • Sufficient and proven level of experience of biomedical/health research-relevant data science in order to be credible with senior research and opinion leaders and stakeholders. Experience could be gained through qualifications and/or work experience, and from a variety of sectors. We have a broad interpretation of 'data science', including, but not limited to, research-focussed and relevant data analytics, data science engineering, data management.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with proven experience of building and maintaining effective teams and partnerships across multiple organisations.
    • Strategic and pragmatic thinker, confident with managing rapid change and high levels of fluidity and uncertainty.

    £61,227
