Opportunity: Lab Officer @ EMBL -- Heidelberg, Germany
Submitted by EMBL Recruitment; posted on Friday, February 18, 2022

    BACKGROUND

The Dorrity group at EMBL Heidelberg is seeking a motivated molecular biologist to act as a Laboratory Officer, helping to set up a new lab and promoting a welcoming, positive atmosphere. Our group uses cutting-edge single-cell genomic techniques to achieve whole-organism phenotyping in zebrafish. We aim to understand how increasing temperature and other environmental stresses alter normal development, with a goal of modulating stress sensitivity of specific cell types. If you are eager to improve your skillset in a leading research environment, we want to hear from you.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Your role:
    Scientific research:
    • Preparation and quality control of next-generation sequencing libraries
    • Performing single cell combinatorial indexing (e.g. sci-RNA-seq, sci-ATAC-seq) experiments (no previous experience required)
    • Tissue dissociation and nuclei extraction from zebrafish embryos
    • Cloning constructs and libraries in microbial systems (E. coli, S. cerevisiae) for downstream applications in zebrafish transgenesis or protein engineering
    • Design of large-scale single-cell experiments perturbation experiments
    • Using CRISPR/Cas-systems for mutagenesis and engineering of sequence variants
    Lab management, training and supervision:
    • Onboarding and training of new group members or visitors in technologies and protocols used in the laboratory
    • Testing new tools, reagents, and updates to experimental protocols
    • Participation in and delegation of general laboratory management tasks such as: instrument maintenance, lab calendar, ordering, inventory, maintaining stocks and training.

    REQUIREMENTS

    You have:
    • Advanced degree from accredited university or technical school or multiple years experience in molecular biology or related discipline
    • Experience in standard genomics techniques (RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, DNA-seq) and library preparation
    • Independent work ethic and desire to learn new methods and protocols
    • Ability to manage your role in multiple collaborative projects
    • Willingness to learn basic programming
    • Ability to speak and write fluently in English, which is the working language at EMBL
    You might also have:
    • Background in fish or other aquatic organisms
    • Experience in single-cell genomic lab techniques
    • Basic programming skills (unix shell, R, Python)

    COMPENSATION

    Why join us:
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus.

    ABOUT US

What else you need to know:
We are Europe's flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1900 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.

Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
